Luke 6:45   ...A good man produces goodness from the good in his heart; an evil man produces evil out of his store of evil.   Each man speaks from his heart's abundance...

It is better to be fearless and cheerful than cheerless and fearful.

You talk about a great voice of his generation, he's right up there.  Such an unique career.

One the funniest things I ever read was his piece on rental cars. I still remember I was in my room on 8S in Schroeder sophomore year (1981-2).

"Nothing handles better than a rented car. You can go faster, turn corners sharper, and put the transmission into reverse while going forward at a higher rate of speed in a rented car than in any other kind. You can also park without looking, and can use the trunk as an ice chest. Another thing about a rented car is that it's an all-terrain vehicle. Mud, snow, water, woods – you can take a rented car anywhere. True, you can't always get it back – but that's not your problem, is it?"

Pure genius.

So true That
We once hunted in Saskatchewn and rented a van. it carried dogs, guns, birds coolers etc. And we drove it through farms ,over fields . Most of the time it was off road and scraping bottom
That thing was beaten like the proverbial rented mule

Oh yeah RIP PJ   I will miss your work

I was a big fan. In his later years, he was a frequent guest on Maher and was always funny and insightful. He'll be missed.

He did an article on Russia for Rolling Stone Magazine some years back and I think I'm still laughing for his description on how f'd up Russia is.

Always found it amusing, especially as a fellow Miami alum, that one of the finest writers/satirists of his generation came out of a university that has no reputation or real clout in journalism/creative writing, despite other strengths.  I believe he actually made fun of it as it pertained to his time at Lampoon cause he wasn't a Harvard guy
