I just read that Tyrese Halliburton is from Oshkosh. Did MU recruit him at all? He's turned into a legitimate NBA baller.

He's from Wisconsin?  I never knew that

I knew that but only because the night before the Xavier game, we were at Sobelman's and there was one group wearing Sacramento Kings jerseys.  They were in town to play the Bucks that night.  I've never seen a Kings fan and I've spent some time in Sacramento...so I figured maybe someone on the team must be from Wisconsin.  So I pulled up the Kings roster and sure enough, Tyrese Halliburton was from Oshkosh and that's the jersey they were wearing.

No, Marquette never got seriously involved. He was a three-star prospect who blew away what he was projected to do, most likely because he played for an under-the-radar AAU team in Wisconsin United rather than a bigger program like Phenom U. Haliburton didn't get much attention in-state, as he picked Iowa State over Northern Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Cincy. Though interestingly, his lead recruiter at ISU was Neil Berry, who is now on staff here under Shaka Smart.

I watched Haliburton lead his team to the State title as a senior.  I thought he looked a little raw but had a nice upside. Maybe a poor man's Wes Matthews after 4 years of college.

He far exceeded my expectations, becoming a lottery pick after two years.

BTW, that State tournament was stacked with future NBA players. Haliburton played Pat Baldwin in the semifinals, and Jalen Johnson lost in the other D1 semifinal.

In D2, there was Johnny Davis and Michael Foster.  By next year, all 5 should be on an NBA roster.

And Tyler Herro didn't even make it to State that year!

Was at the State Tournament watching that year too. Fun games to watch.

Wow, would be great to have just one of those guys at MU. Hopefully in the future, talent like this within the State has MU in their final consideration set everytime.

It would be nice, but Johnson and Baldwin were never coming to MU.  Davis was offered but Wojo wouldn't offer his brother like UW did.  As mentioned, Halliburton was overlooked by everyone.  And I don't know if Foster ever qualified academically.

I understand Baldwin had the family connection, but why not with Johnson? My comment was intended to mean, while I don't want to become the one and done factory, we should and can compete with the Duke's of the world with local talent.

Johnson wasn't interested in any of the local schools.  He was interested in playing for a big time program that could get him in the NBA ASAP.  And he ended up not even sticking it out at Duke for an entire season.

I agree with you that it would be ideal if MU could be in the door for all great local talent.  But in these specific cases, there were perfectly legitimate reasons why MU didn't land them.  IMO the only one that Wojo deserves legit criticism for is Davis.  He was way late in offering him compared to UW.

Also at the time, Jordan Davis was considering playing football and UW offered for that sport. This article speaks a little to that.
