I played tons of open mics in college and one weekly gig, the townies had a habit of tipping whenever you might have randomly played a cover they liked.  Like would literally saunter up and toss a dollar on stage, which was super amusing.  But thats the closest to it.

I had a friend who tried to busk in the Chicago Red Line a few times and got robbed twice and said F it.

I've always wondered how often people who play in the El or other big city subways get robbed. High risk, it seems...but dependent on when and where you play I guess.

I busked playing the pipes a few times in galway. And usually make a decent chunk of change, get flashed a few times, get free drinks busking around chicago on St Patricks day.

I must be old - had to look up what Busking was and made sure my bride was not in the room when I did (just in case).
