He is the home town beat writer so only so far he can go with directly praising us , but he did give at least some credit to our D. Also a lot of quotes from Coach Steele about how X was playing Hero Ball which is sort of a backdoor way of complimenting our D

The result of playing against a good defense and losing can be deceptive.  On the face of it, it often seems like the team that loses just "didn't play that well down the stretch" or "the offense went cold." 

Maybe it's a psychological thing.  Could be that it's simply easier to blame a loss on the idea that your team played poorly rather than acknowledging that the other team's defense was really good and was the reason for the poor offensive performance.
