Kudos to Bill Scholl and the influential donors who made it possible to move on from Wojo.

It is great to see MU Basketball back in great hands with Shaka, and an enthusiasm back among our alum and fanbase.  The one benefit from keeping Wojo for 6 years too long was that it made the timing right to where Shaka was ready to leave Texas.  So..perhaps that will be Wojo's lasting contribution to the MU program:  A placeholder coach who didn't totally derail the program, who recruited some good kids, who were good basketball players, but lacked good coaching.

I anticipate a ban-free existence here on Scoop moving forward due to no longer having to argue with well-intentioned, but misguided Wojo supporters.    8-)

This team is talented and so fun to watch.

Watched the Ole Miss game but couldn't pull two midnight tips in a row so was thrilled to wake up to this scoreline. Was going to come here to post something cornier "Wojo was the winding road that led us straight to Shaka"

Shaka wouldn't have been available until this year. I don't know the inside baseball but I wouldn't be surprised if Scholl already has a pretty strong signal from Shaka's camp before pulling the plug on Wojo.

There will be bad losses and adversity and it may even ultimately turn out that Shaka isn't the guy - but man - through five games at least it feels like we just might have found our forever coach - our Wright, our Few, our K. It may not last but I'm gonna soak that in because since my MU tenure began (Crean era) I've NEVER felt that - I loved the success Buzz brought us but I always thought he was slimy and never wanted him as the forever coach.

I also think we're getting the best version of Shaka.

I don't think it would have worked out quite the same had #DoneDeal actually happened seven years ago.

I think Shaka learned from his experience and will find a happy medium between VCU and Texas in both recruiting and style.

We get better recruits than VCU that actually want to buy into Shaka's system.

Yes. It's how the big boys do coaching changes. Part of moving on from the last guy is having the right guy lined up to replace him. This past March, absolute worst case we could have ended up with was Porter Moser (who I think probably could have done pretty well). Shaka is looking to be the right choice.

Moser is doing well. But Shaka is getting it done his way. Glad the mumbmuts finally pulled the trigger on Wojo. Should have been done sooner. This team makes watching them fun again.

I agree with this analysis.

If rumors are true (that BOT were pushing for Moser and Scholl was adamant about Shaka being his top-choice from day one), then Scholl, Lovell, the BOT and the supportive donors all deserve a ton of credit.  They allowed the AD to make his choice and got behind it. Now, the entire university community is reaping the rewards thus far.

This. The timing was just right. Had we moved on from Wojo earlier we wouldn't have gotten Shaka.

And Shaka saw it wasn't happening for him in Texas due to multiple different things.

It appears to be working out for both. Also Moser would have been a fine choice but he's doing quite well over at OK.

There's some revisionist history about expectations when moving on from Wojo.

As it was being discussed during the final months of the 2020-21 season, no one expected Shaka to be available.  Texas was having a very good season and all indications were, he had moved off the hot seat.  Then the tournament happened.

The general consensus was a couple of things, the administration wouldn't be motivated financially to make a change and any hire seemed to scream Moser or a mid-major coach.  The administration wisely understood the short term financial (Yes, I know it was paid for largely from outside the University coffers) hit less than a year of apathy at Fiserv.  I have no idea if they thought they could get Shaka, though I imagine they had an idea.

The hiring of Shaka changed the expectations of this years team, at least as I saw it.  Hiring Moser doesn't lead to the type of players Shaka wanted or uses and this team would look wildly different.  Hiring an assistant or mid-major coach would have changed expectations as well.  Guys like that have a "longer leash".

I didn't expect Shaka to start like this team has.  I did expect this team to be a lot better in March than November and the benefits to really be reaped in years 3-5 and that's still entirely possible.

Or, our fun so far is because of Abilene Christian.
Luke 6:45   ...A good man produces goodness from the good in his heart; an evil man produces evil out of his store of evil.   Each man speaks from his heart's abundance...

It is better to be fearless and cheerful than cheerless and fearful.
