2021/22 roster
« on: August 04, 2021, 10:27:52 AM »
I noticed that coach Smart has an open scholarship since Garcia left.  I'm not sure why he wouldn't fil it with another big.  One of Wojo's issues was never having a full cupboard, Surprised after all the early activity that coach Smart hasn't filled his.  Anyone have any thoughts or concerns on this ?

He tried to land many other transfers.   He was unsuccessful.   12 is better than last year

What is the quality of a player that is still available in August? Considering the pure amount of roster turnover from last year to this year, as was expected with a coaching change, my level of concern right now is zero.

Ah yes, the bounty of 4 star bigs that are leftover in the 2021 class in August are numerous.

In this transfer environment, it makes sense to have a scolly free for a mid-year transfer that can benefit the team (or even a senior in HS from the 2022 class that wants to enroll early, see, Micah Etienne et al).
Assume what I say should be in teal if it doesn't pass the smell test for you.

If Kauth is a "5"  and Lewis is a "4"  who is the most likely "4/5".  I just think you need a space eater.

I think Lewis may start at the 4 and Kuath at the 5, but my guess is that when Kuath goes to the bench, Lewis will slide over to the 5 and O-Max/Joplin will step into the 4. Their may be some limited situations where O-Max plays the 5 while Joplin plays the 4. I think Itejere is a redshirt candidate. I don't know what to make of Oso...could see him at the 4 or even the 3 in special defense-focused situations.

While Kuath is the only player who will look like a traditional center, this roster has 5 other guys who are 6'7" or taller and 3 of them are 215 or more.  Number of options in the post won't be a problem. Quality of options? Need to see.

You know his Dad played center in HS....
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

It is difficult over the long run to offset brute force with speed and agility.  My fear is that MU will get overrun buy bigger stronger teams.

Same fear as last year.   More options this year.

I would be concerned about more turnovers then being run overed,  curious if there is a point guard in the group that is becoming the leader?  Anybody seen practice yet?

Worries:
1.   Experience
2.   Three point shooting
3.  PG play
4.   Still no slashing switchables

Not worries:

1.  Size
2.  Athleticism

At 73 years old, I think George Thompson's best days are behind him. His speed and agility have declined to the point where he will get overrun by bigger and stronger teams.

Hopefully Shaka relies on players in their late teens and early 20's instead.

Good "brute force" reference.  At 70 I am familiar with "brute Force" George.  Perhaps Igadoro,if he bulked up some from last season, can be the "4/5" switchable.  I like Joplin as a "3"  Morsell and Elliot at "1" and "2" respectively Kauth and Lewis at "5" and"4" respectively.  I just thjink that a true "5" to support Kauth would be good.

Not worries:

1.  Size
2.  Athleticism

To the worries level, I'd add:
5.  Skill/Shooting (other than a couple of players).

To the No worries list I'd add:
3.   Attitude/Hustle (I see Shaka getting players to play positive and get after it).

I wouldn't be surprised to see us lose several games where we held the opponent to 60 points or less.

Anyone know if Cameron Brown is a scholarship player?  He's listed on the roster page:

https://gomarquette.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/2021-22?&sort=class

I recall a brief thread when he committed, but nobody was sure if he was a scholarship player or walk-on.  Did he use the 13th scholarship.

I don’t know for sure, but don’t think Shaka used a scholarship on him. Dudes gotta be a walk on.
I would take the Rick SLU program right now.

He's a walk on. He may end up getting the last scholarship but I doubt it would happen until Spring semester. Don't know if other walk ons would get priority over him.

There are a few worries but this is a transition year.  in the end we will surprise people in '21-22 and be on track to do some damage for the rest of the decade,
meaning  '22-23  through '29-30.
