Tiger Woods Was Speeding About 40 M.P.H. Above the Limit When He Crashed

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/07/sports/golf/tiger-woods-crash-update.html?campaign_id=60&emc=edit_na_20210407&instance_id=0&nl=breaking-news&ref=headline&regi_id=108420427&segment_id=55133&user_id=d36dcf821462fdd16ec3636710a855fa

Tiger Woods was driving about 40 miles per hour over the speed limit when he crashed a sport-utility vehicle in February, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva. Woods was traveling between 84 and 87 miles per hour in a 45 m.p.h. zone, Villanueva said at a news conference Wednesday. His car was traveling at an estimated 75 m.p.h. when it struck a tree.

“The primary causal factor for the collision was driving at an unsafe speed for the road conditions and being unable to negotiate the curve,” said Villanueva.

Woods was not cited for driving too fast and no criminal charges will be filed, Villanueva said. He added that there were no signs of impairment, and that Woods was wearing his seatbelt.

That’s unfortunate. Fortunate neither he nor someone else wasn’t injured or worse. It was good that he was wearing his seatbelt. It’s saved a lot of lives.

Everything about the Tiger crash continues to be completely fishy.  Chalking it up to simple speeding and then say "he accidentally hit the gas" but reiterate he was completely sober and uninhibited, even though they didnt take any samples following the crash.

At the end of the day, he survived, nobody else was hurt, nothing was damaged other than a car, thankfully, but it REEKS off sweeping things under the rug to protect a legendary athlete's misdoings.

Yeah, especially after the DUI he had after his last back surgery. Glad he’s ok and hopefully on the road to recovery. He definitely hasn’t earned the benefit of the doubt though.

IDK, he was driving too fast.  Why do people assume it is more than that?  Why would they cover that up?

If that’s what those guys support, they can support it how they want.  Golf is filled with dudes who are almost certainly right of me politically.  Doesn’t matter to me.  I still watch and like it quite a bit.  Sports are wholly political.  It would be silly to think it’s one-sided.

I think it's a little bizarre.  He didn't brake apparently at all?

Cause he has a history of substance abuse and issues with that and driving. And then the added oddities of how the direct aftermath was handled compared to other similar scenarios.

Also, I’ve been in multiple accidents and nearly avoided accidents.  In those situations, and otherwise, never have I accidentally hit the gas instead of brake, and have never heard of anyone else doing so outside of the very young, very elderly, or impaired drivers

I'm not here to suggest he was intoxicated. But surely you could think of a reason for it to be covered up if he was.

As for police/first responders saying no obvious signs of intoxication, there could be plenty of reasons for that. People tend to be a little woozy after slamming into a tree at 70 mph. He did say he couldn't remember the accident after all.

The other explanation of course is simply that he was completely sober.

Yeah this seems like one of those situations where the cover up is actually the simplest explanation.  Either the guy with a record of driving under the influence of prescription meds did that again or the unimpaired 45 year old driver with a history of driving under the influence was not impaired in any way this time but panicked and hit the gas instead of the brakes, never hit the brake before crashing, the police rushed out to say he wasn't under the influence even though he said he didn't remember driving and the police never sought a blood draw and have stated they do not release investigation details without his lawyers' approval.

And ultimately, whatever.  He got lucky and didn't hurt anyone else.  But if substances did play a role here, I really hope he gets that figured out for his own sake.

I mean, if someone is in a single car accident with the injuries of the type that Tiger suffered, do they usually do a blood draw?

I think the simplest explanation is that he was driving too fast.

Classic Rory.  He’ll shoot 66 tomorrow and get a back door top-10.  Saw a stat that he’s +4 from 125-150 yards.  Lost man with his wedges right now

My Westwood/Rory pick looking brutal in my pool. Only thing worse would be if they brought the UK strain with them and infect the field.

Sounds like the greens are playing crazy fast even for the Masters.  Only two sub 70 so far.

DeChambeau is really +9 when you consider Augusta is a mere par 67 for him.

And they are getting faster as the day goes on. Rose is the only player under par who hasn't already finished the round.

The greens at Augusta are brown. All you need to know about the set up.

I enjoy Majors when it is hard to shoot a low score . Keeps a lot more players in the mix till the back nine on Sunday.

Wow....

-6 for Rose?  Is he dropping darts out there or sinking putts from everywhere?

He's been on an absolute tear on the back nine, considering he was -1 at the turn. Haven't seen too many crazy long putts when I've had the chance to watch... think he's just piping drives and hunting pins.

Wow.  A 65 is a incredible score when only two other guys are in the 60's.

Love it when pros aren’t putting up ridiculously low scores at majors.
