A break for MU?

Yes, MU has a big battle looming at Notre Dame on Saturday. We'll address that over the next day or so.

But the Golden Eagles appear to have gotten a big break leading into their following game next Tuesday at Seton Hall.

Paul Gause, a senior guard and the Pirates' best defender, could be out after suffering a foot injury in a loss Wednesday to Notre Dame.

"We don't know exactly what it is. It looked semi-serious," said coach Bobby Gonzalez on the Big East's weekly coaches' teleconference on Thursday. "We had to put him on crutches, and he's going to go get an MRI today. Let's put it this way: it looks very doubtful that he will play (Saturday) against Villanova. We're guard-oriented, and it definitely hurts us not to have Paul.

"Now, granted, during our five-game win streak we didn't have him, but he came back and helped us beat Rutgers, and he was pretty tough down at Georgetown when we got them to turn the ball over 21 times and had 15 steals. We would rather have him than not have him, and I do think it hurts us not to have him."

Gause, who missed the Pirates' 61-56 loss at MU on Jan. 8 with a hand injury, is averaging 7.6 points 3.2 rebounds and 2.8 steals per game, was a key part of Seton Hall's defensive attack, which is averaging a Big East-leading 10.4 steals per game.

Considering all the troubles MU has had on the road to date, this has got to be good news for a team desperate for any kind of positivity at this point.
