What is The NCAA's policy for players while the anthem is played? Do most schools still play the anthem before games at empty gyms or arenas during COVID as I don't see the point? I can't remember a game on TV where the anthem is played; even before COVID? This seems rather petty to me.

Wow ... talk about "cancel culture."

I guess we don't really believe in peaceful protest in this country.

Its a school in Virginia. Explains all you need to know.

The anthem should be disassociated entirely from sports events.

Of course it should.

Since when does logic enter into any of this stuff?

Agreed. Pretty much anything except where we as a country are being represented it doesn't make sense. I always think it's comical to see teams mostly comprised of of non American latinx and Asian baseball players, or Canadian, Scandinavian, or Eastern European hockey players lining up for our anthem.

Play it at the olympics, international matches, world cups, etc for when our players are representing our country

Yep. It ain't for the athletes, obviously. It's public relations, faux patriotism.

It's up to conferences then individual institutions.

At games I've been at this season it's ranged from entire teams kneeling, a few players and coaches, one player out of both teams, or no one kneeling.

Kinda screws up the concept of the Olympics, hey?

Why? The Olympics can't be played without national anthems? Those who don't believe anthems represent much of anything aren't worthy of proudly representing their countries?

The Hippie Satan of Hyperbole

I might be wrong, but the only time national anthems are played during the Olympics are for the medal ceremonies.  Which makes some sense.

I know that international soccer matches include the national anthem beforehand.

We can just hand them their medals when they get out the pool. Opening and closing ceremonies? Who needs them?

Same with the World Cup.

Sure. Or we could have ceremonies without anthems.

I think it's fair to have one at the olympics and such. Again you're representing your country in those. Whole concept of international sports is rooted in patriotism.

Um..., in the Olympics, they are playing for the United States. Professional athletes are not.

I agree with this. I am fine with national anthems at the Olympics, World Cup, and other international competitions where the competitors represent their home country.

I also think that the teams/competitors who are being honored by the playing of their national anthem should have the right to stand, kneel, raise their fist, etc.

FIFY.

But sure, I'll agree with what Goooo says. If it's still deemed crucial to play anthems at the Olympics, whatevs ... as long as the athletes have the same ability to protest peacefully that other human beings do.

Yeah I don't necessarily agree that international sport is rooted in politics so much as some countries have tried to get it to be that way.

That being said if any athletes want to use that platform go for it. George Foreman did

Okay it's unnecessary but at least makes some sense at international events like the Olympics where you are part of a national team, though even there they could raise flags but play the Olympic anthem.
But at your regular run-of-the-mill sporting event? Just stop.

Unfortunately, there's no going back.

Can you imagine what the blowback would be if one of the major pro or college leagues comes out and says, "We've decided to not play the anthem"?

It would be beyond a P.R. nightmare. It would be Anthemgeddon.

Because, you know, patriotism!

What they should do is play the anthem of every player's country. There'd likely be bad PR for the fans booing and then the team can say "all or nothing"

Going to run on a unity platform of "our national anthem sucks"
