I got it, its all about our nomadic culture.
It has nothing to do with March, championships, or win loss records.
How many times have you moved in the past, lets say, 20 years?
We just crave change, new car, new home, new job, new phone and new coach.
Same goes for the coaches, new school, town, league or fan base.
I have family and friends who just move on all the time, and most of them are retired.
New Jersey to Georgia, to Florida, to North Carolina.  New Jersey to Costa Rica, to Arizona.  New Jersey to South Carolina then back to New Jersey.
Sound familiar?
That sounds a little "strange", so we need rationalizations.
We need a new coach to be happy, ha.
No, we are really just bored and want change.
We want the excitment of a search committee , the thrill of the chase, the blood of the kill, the crunching of numbers, the dreams of a successful future.
Thats what this is all about, it really has nothing to do with WOJO.

I remember Moving On jeans.  Does that count?

Same job since 90.
Same wife since 92.
Same house since 93.

Luke 6:45   ...A good man produces goodness from the good in his heart; an evil man produces evil out of his store of evil.   Each man speaks from his heart's abundance...

It is better to be fearless and cheerful than cheerless and fearful.

Good one, very funny.

Same wife since 1973. Marquette has had 8 coaches since then.

Some things are meant to be permanent, others are not.

Recognizing, accepting and enjoying the difference is important.
I think the Al McGuire quote is "Congratulate the temporary".

None of this, of course, is true. No one was calling for Buzz's head in year 7, except maybe Ners. Nor Crean, despite consecutive NITs. But this is more about your narrative of everything is fine & nothing matters. So...Arby's?

QuoteCelebrate the Temporary by Clyde Reid

Celebrate the temporary
Don't wait until tomorrow
Live today
Celebrate the simple things
Enjoy the butterfly
Embrace the snow
Run with the ocean
Delight in the trees
Or a single lonely flower
Go barefoot in the wet grass
Don't wait
Until all the problems are solved
Or all the bills are paid
You will wait forever
Eternity will come and go
And you
Will still be waiting
Live in the now
With all its problems and its agonies
With its joy
And its pain
Celebrate your pain
Your despair
Your anger
It means you're alive
Look closer
Breathe deeper
Stand taller
Stop grieving the past
There is joy and beauty
Today
It is temporary
Here now and gone
So celebrate it
While you can
Celebrate the temporary

Change.

This is a pretty tough sell at a relatively conservative, largely homogeneous school that in 2020, still has a three fourths student population from just two states.

You do realize that there are many people here and out there that have not lived your life? Yes? Probably more so than what general statistics would say.

I haven't lived and spent time in a lot of places because I was bored. There are a lot of great places snd people out there. I don't need any rationalizations. I am not energized by frequent coaching changes.

I'd just like to have a more consistently  successful men's basketball program. And, because I follow other men's and women"s sports, I would like to see the same for some of those sports as well.

Good point, but when he found Milwaukee he never left.  No going back to Rockaway or searching for the Holy Grail.  Home is where the heart is, a little trite, but true.  Where is WOJO's heart?

Is it still that way?  It was that way 50 years ago.  We keep trying to expand the pool and the Big East must help.  When I did high school recruiting, in N.J., it was a tough sell.

NCMUFan

What would be the state makeup for the student populations at the UW extensions out there?
Probably much more homogeneous if not including the foreign students.

bilsu

I never thought I would say this. I moved on to the NBA from college basketball. This occurred because my brother twisted my arm to join his fantasy league. Now I watch the NBA every night rooting for my players and rooting against my opponents players. I could not even waste my time watching the end of the Badger loss to Ohio St., which I would of thoroughly enjoyed in the past. I am even beginning to wonder if I will even watch the MU/Georgetown game.

River Falls and Superior are about 50% Minnesota students. Stout and Eau Claire have a fair amount too. This is due to tuition reciprocity between the two states.

Whitewater and Platteville have about 15-20 %of its students from Illinois.

People are sick of the excuses and seeing the same issues reoccur year over year. That's what it is for me, pretty simple. He's not producing at the rate we had been in the past, he's not living up to our expectations/standard, and we haven't seen much growth from him as a coach (esp in game)

He literally tried to go to the Bucks. And if he had moved to the NBA, and succeeded or failed with the Bucks, he likely would have moved to another franchise/job and had the intinerate coach's life.  His ties to Milwaukee post coaching were like why former college football or basketball stars often reside in their college towns if a very successful pro career doesn't work out, their name and reputation there provides the best opportunities for revenue and employment.

I have no doubt McGuire loved Milwaukee and didn't regret putting roots down there, but to claim that it was cause he didn't possess a toxic lust for change you're ascribing to many here and never wished to cast his gaze elsewhere is a stretch to fit a narrative.

There are of course a variety of ways to be successful.

You could have a Villanova, whose coach stays 19 seasons and counting.

You could have a Xavier, and have success with several coaches going 9, 7, 5, and 9 seasons in succession.

You can be Butler and go 1, 6, 6, 1, 3 seasons with new coaches.

You can be Creighton and have two coaches in the past 26 seasons.

Just win, be successful, and if/when a coach leaves, replace them with someone who will win. And when you aren't successful, replace the coach with someone else who will be more successful.

There is no one way to do it.

Gotta believe LaCrosse has a decent percentage from MN too. Lots of kids from here in Rochester look at it as an alternative to schools like Winona or Mankato.

Do people typically replace children? What's the expiration date?  ;D
