We need a gold t-shirt giveaway... apparently about 50% of the people at the game don't have one!  Jesus Christ people... get with the program!  Wear a damn Gold t-shirt!!

BTW... per ESPN, 50% of the Bradley Center was empty at tip-off!!  Before any alums bitch about the quality of the student section, look in the damn mirror.

sorry folks... pissed about the game.   >:(

I think the bad weather in Milwaukee may have contributed to the lack of crowd, but I'm with you, those that were able to make it to the game totally missed the memo.  Gold out failed miserably.

What bad weather? It's high 30s without snow/rain since about 2pm.

Freezing rain makes it hard to travel long distances, like my family was planning on for this game but decided not too because of bad roads.

There's been very little precipitation in Milwaukee since 2PM. Everyone from Illinois said the roads were fine.

Don't play the poor crowd on the weather. It's Winter.

Weather or not, if you go to the damn game, make a damn effort to wear something GOLD!!

It wasn't bad weather .. it's the 6pm start.  People get out of work at 5pm, try to get home, try to get to the game.  It's tough.

.. The students pissed me off the most.  Full lower bowl, upper was maybe 20% full.  For Louisville?  Are you serious?  Is there a better game to go to?  Seriously, WTF??  Why did you even buy tickets?  Time to stop that #1 student section in the nation crap.   -- We have 1500 great student fans and what, like 4000 student tickets sold?  That leaves an awful lot of fair weather fans.

6PM on a Monday generally doesn't work for students either. I'm not sticking up for the student section, but Monday night classes are more common than uncommon. Of course, classes are classes.

I'm a student and I totally agree with your assessment. I heard a lot of lame ass excuses today. I can't believe our students don't get behind this team more, it's not like we have any other sports to cheer for. I don't know what it takes to get people out, this is definitely a huge rivalry game. Pathetic showing by the team and the fans.

It's a good thing they didn't give out shirts, or the students might have copied Duke and thrown them on the court.  Of course, Duke responded by playing a dominant second half and we would have continued to look flat.

Actually I think everyone in the building needs help with their wardrobe...
Fans aren't able to wear gold.  Even when it isn't a "gold out" game they usually find it hard to wear some team colors.
Even some students think they'll stick out better if they wear a blue shirt during a "gold out", and can't use the excuse that they don't have a gold shirt when gold shirts are provided to them several times a year.
Players seem to have the "even if we lose, we still look good" attitude with those flashy uniforms.  Give me plain uniforms and a flashy team please.
The cheerleaders' new uniforms are pretty ugly.
The dance team's uniforms look like the sweats girls wear to the library on Sunday afternoons.

I did know of a few students that couldn't make it because of late Monday classes.  With holidays that cancel Monday classes a few times this semester it makes it difficult for professors to cancel additional Monday classes for any reason.

I disagree... I see A LOT of Green & Gold when the Packers play.  The fans at our games are weak... stop with the blue denim shirts and black jeans!  support the damn team with some gold!

I agree and what the hell is with people who show up with a shirt and tie on???Its not so hard to throw some gear in a bag and change at the office before heading on down to the BC!
I agree get some gold on and be in your seat at tip!

spiral97

I was equally disappointed in the shirt colors.. would put the gold blanket at maybe 60%.. MAYBE.. and that's ignoring the suits who probably came straight from work... I saw MU fans wearing red for fricks sake.. RED!  I saw Wisconsin shirts there too.. geez..
then they did the "party row" shirt give away...
the shirts they gave away were navy blue..
the mascot gave it to a row that had a guy wearing RED in it....?!?!

the shirts that came down from the rafters in the parachutes.. yep navy blue too...

the shirts they shot out of the (IMHO very disappointing) shirt gun.. WHITE...

this totally isn't organized.. pick a color and stick with it.. heck bus loads of the people (including the national anthem chorus) were wearing those powder blue anniversary shirts..

It's not just in the bradley center either.. rocky and I drove through campus earlier too.. in that 2 minute drive we saw:
1 person wearing an Iowa Hawkeyes shirt
1 person wearing UWM sweatpants
1 person wearing a Notre Dame sweatshirt
several UW hats

ugh!
Once a warrior always a warrior.. even if the feathers must now come with a beak.

that's why, homely tho they may be, the vest is okay;  leave the office, pull off the tie, hang sportcoat in car/pull on vest and 'presto!'

muPARTY

i agree with a lot that's been said.
bad attendence i blame on the start time.  6pm is rough for anyone.  hell, i get off work @ 6p.  a lot of students i know have the philosophy, if you're not there early for the lower bowl, it's not worth it (for those who don't know, is like two different worlds).  so you're talking about doors opening @ 4:30p and lots of students are still in class, just getting done, or in desperate need of food.

the biggest problem with the colors is that MU can't commit to one.  they have to push both blue and gold.  seems like the athletic department refuses to push one color for games.  Duke, Mich St. push white at games; Indiana, Wisc, Cinci, UL, push red; Kansas, dark blue; UCLA, baby blue.  MU seems destined to have a 50/50 gold/blue (both baby and dark).

a problem with the shirt giveaways, is the way they do them.  having to go to the lobby and get them.  it's nie for people trying to get the size that they want, but the lines get too long, people start taking multiple shirts for "family members".  what they need to do is have the shirts put on all the seats before the game. takes too long you say?  when they've put the poms on the seats in the past, they've had the BC cleaning staff do it the nite before (work force of 30+).

🏀

Yes the different colors pose a problem. However, I'm real fricking tired of all the gold shirts. Outside the BC and campus, they are ugly. The print fades extremely fast with the yellow background and they turn into garbage shirts more fitting for car waxing than wearing.

muPARTY

on another note, i've been disappointed by the crowds the last 3-4yrs for MU games.  the student section gets less and less involved.  used to be the entire lower bowl s.s. would jump and be crazy, not it really only the group on the floor and the first few rows of the seats.

part of the reason is, they've gotten them less involved.  my freshman yr, they used to use the blimps to fly over and drop tickets or other gifts on the crowd.  there's restrictions on when students can line up.  the admin stresses that give-aways (t-shirts, those little plastic basketballs) go to the 'other fans'.  they're quick to take down signs that even hint at something that isn't "PG" ('Catholics vs Convicts' was my favortie when Cinci came here in 05?).

the loudest you ever hear the rest of the crowd is when they "boo" something.  sure they stand up and clap when there's some kind of run, but it's hardly ever something that is one of those really special moments (UConn, Novak beating ND, Cinci in '03, UL- pick, one are a few of those times where those moments happen).

the thing about MU, is it's more about the image than it is the game.  that's why the many of the older fans don't sport the yellow ts.  look around the arena, it's like a business meeting or a sunday at chruch the way people are dressed up.  noting is wrong with jeans, tennis shows, and a yellow t-shirt at a basketball game.  no one will think less of you because you don't have slacks, loafers, and a collared shirt on, if they do.... F*** 'EM!

sorry, this isn't one of my normal classy posts, but one of the coolest things i've been been to in college sports was the NIT championship game @ Kansas St when the MU women played them.  90% of the 12,000+ K-St fans had purple on, and whenever a K-St player shot a 3, everyone... and i mean EVERYONE stood up with one arm in the air (ref style), and if it hit, raised the other and yelled "THREE" together.  for a person like me who is mezmorized by the college atmosphere, i was speechless at just how amazing it was.

You're right.  And as far as the BC giving away dark blue and white shirts, I would be game.  As a student, I wouldn't even want another gold shirt.  In my time at MU, my counts says I received 2 free dark blue shirts, 2 free light blue shirts, and 9 free gold shirts.  The only original ideas were the Wade shirts from two years ago and the long-sleeve light blue shirts given away at Madness this year.  I'd rather they did the Duke route and got an environmental group to give away free green t-shirts for everyone than have another generic gold shirt.

I drove up from Chicago - foggy but no big deal.  Parked at MU campus and walked to teh game - weather should not have kept people away....

Granted Duke has a small arena, but EVERYONE does the "Let's go Doooook" chant, nearly everytime they have the ball.  We can't even get half the student section to clap to the fight song much less more than 1 in 20 non-students.  Plus besides heckling the refs we have no cheers that get through.  Of course we could always copy Louisville's stupid bird thing, since I think our mascot is a bird of some kind...wait, nobody cares about that so it becomes one less thing we can rally around.  Perhaps some new cheers could be instituted at midnight madness next year instead of showing us karate and how to almost tip an ATV when we came to see basketball.
The student section is somewhat alienated from giveaways or anything else that really gets them into the game besides picking someone who usually would less embarrass themselves by doing a potty shot to try to win free tuitition (tonight making my argument less effective).  Plus, as the story of BC security taking paper scraps away from students proves, more focus has been put on babysitting students rather than allowing them to have fun.

Our cheers suck. That's because we don't have any that are original to Marquette minus our fight song. It's so lame. I agree with you 100% here, it's kind of hard for the student section to get excited about chanting "defense" or whatever else kind of crap the cheerleaders do. We need something unique to Marquette, there is zero creativity or unity in our student section right now.
