U.S. Attorney for SDNY

was blindsided with a press release from Bill Barr that said U.S. Attorney for SDNY Geoffrey Berman was stepping down and being replaced with someone who has never been a prosecutor. (Late Friday night) He was asked earlier in the day to step down or take a different position. He said no.

His response?

I still haven't seen anything lower than him having his militia attack innocent protesters in Lafayette Square so he could do a photo-op with a bible -- an act so heinous that even Pat Effen Robertson condemned it.

That "tops" the previous low of him telling the entire world that he trusted Putin more than his own intelligence people ... which "topped" the previous low of him saying there were "very fine people" marching alongside the torch-carrying, anti-Semitic-phrase-chanting racists in Charlottesville.

I don't think this "rises" to the Lafayette Square low, but he certainly does have plenty of time to beat that.

Perhaps tonight, even.

Berman has agreed to leave as he negotiated to have his Deputy United States Attorney Audrey Strauss replace him and continue their cases and investigations. She has a good legal reputation.

Barr lied today in another public commentary and said Berman was making this a spectacle when it was Barr who sent out the false press release that Berman was stepping down.

Barr said Trump told him to fire Berman. Trump said he was not involved.
