Quote from: JakeBarnes on October 10, 2025, 05:37:12 PMThank you! A big pile of nerves and excitement right now!

Are you running it?

I understand that feeling well.

No - I ran it in 2017 and am now trying to do marathons in all the states so no repeat states for me for now.  I am running in Des Moines next week.

Good luck!

Ended up squeaking in with a 4:29 and some change today. I'm dead

What's tougher, moving 300 feet in 5 hours of pickleball or 138,435 feet in a marathon over 2.5-6 hours?

It was good - main goal was to finish under the time limit and get in another state.  17th state and 20th marathon overall accomplished :).  Weather was pretty good - could have used a bit more shade but it wasn't super hot.

I wasn't happy to find out during the race that their time limit went by gun time and not chip time.  With the corral start, I didn't start until 15 minutes after the gun went off so there's 15 minutes lost towards the time limit.  I've never done a race where they went by gun time for their time limit and am not sure I would have signed up for this race had I known that.  But I never got close enough to the time limit to worry if this would count for me.

This was probably my worst marathon training so far when it comes to my long runs - had a few aborted long runs.  But I felt pretty strong during the race and never doubted I'd make it.

I was annoyed with a couple big hills early on after they advertised the race as flat :).  But overall it wasn't too hilly.  I did a hilly marathon in April in Knoxville and didn't want to deal with another hilly one again so soon.

Love to hear the report! So...what state is next?

Not sure yet.  It's getting harder to find the right race between finding a date that works, a friendly time limit and a state that I haven't done yet (although there's still plenty to choose from with only 17 states done so far).

I just threw my name in for Berlin. Because Id love a reason to go to Octoberfest

Good luck!  That sounds like it would be a fun adventure.

I was just doing some google research and Cowtown in Fort Worth at the end of February caught my eye.  That would mean a tough winter training schedule though.  I could do Palm Beach, FL in December but am hesitant to do another one this year.  When I did marathons one month apart in spring 2024, my second marathon in that sequence did not go very well.

Ive heard that about Marathons that are back to back. If I get into Berlin, it means Chicago becomes a "party pace" race and i just take it all in. Theyre a few weeks apart and I plan on staying post-berlin to springboard it into an anniversary trip as well.

30k trail race in a week! First real one I've done. Starting to feel like my legs are ready again (9 mi yesterday--hopefully 12-13 on Saturday). Just cant get over it being so dark in the am and pm--miss 530a daylight and its throwing off my run schedule

Good luck with the trail race!  Sounds like a fun adventure.  When will you find out if you got into the Berlin marathon?

I did decide to do Palm Beach - it's about 8 weeks after my last marathon so better than the 4-5 weeks in between I've done previously.  Sunday I had a tough run but did manage to get through a 17 miler two weeks post the marathon.  Next to figure out my target races for 2026.

Kenya's Sabastian Sawe ran 1:59:30 in the London Marathon, marking the first time any man had posted a time under 2 hours in competition. Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha went 1:59:41.

Reminds me of when I had to run from the Milwaukee cops who wanted to ticket me for jaywalking.

Running soldier field 10 miler this weekend. Gonna be a rude awakening--apparently eating and boozing are not "training plans."

Not great but not bad. Really need to focus more on training

I've just started running within the last six months. I'm starting to read through the thread to get caught up and avoid asking things that have been answered repeatedly, but I wanted to start participating. If someone had told me a year ago (or 10 years ago...or 40 years ago) that I'd start turning into a runner, there is absolutely no way I'd have believed it. I still am having a hard time believing it. I wouldn't say I'm a runner...but I'm certainly runner-curious.

I'm not good at it. I'm not fast. I'm just learning. I'm open to suggestions. I'm going to work my way though this thread.

My first real goal was that if my daughter came to me and asked me to run a 5k with her, I could just say "yes" and not, "give me 10 weeks to try to prepare." I've achieved that. I run 5k at least once a week. My current goal is to run 5k in under 30 minutes. Yes, I'm aware that this is really slow...but I'm improving. I'm at about 35 minutes but hoping to get under 30 within another couple months. Long term, I'm thinking about maybe doing a half next year around this time.

This is a little embarrassing, but just to let people know where I'm coming from, I've lost about 70 pounds since September (no shots...not that there's anything wrong with that). It's been a lot of work, but I'm finally doing some things that I should have been doing long ago. Expecting to lose another 40 or so. The running is getting easier as I lose.

My current training regimen that I'm doing is intervals on Tuesdays for 30 minutes or so; zone 2 running on Thursdays for 30 minutes or so; and 5k (or longer) on Saturday (and I intend to increase those in the future). The T-Th are treadmill and the weekend runs are outside. I also do strength and stretching M-W-F. I'm actually using ChatGPT to help me train. I also have historically used MapMyRun but have recently downloaded Strava and am trying that out.

I've been distance running for 43 years since being introduced to Cross Country as a Freshman in high school.
Running is cumulative.  Keep up with it like you have been and you will continue to see your results improve.  Make sure to give your body some off days for recovery which sounds like you are doing with some strength training mixed in.  Most of the running apps come with training plans.  Strava should have if you want to take a look.  I use Runkeeper.  In my life, I've run only two half-marathons and a few 10K's and pretty much all of my races are 5K's.  I prefer running outside and usually do 2 to 4 mile runs 6:00am weekday mornings including when I work travel.  It's hard to fit more in my schedule although I would love to despite my knees not really wanting to cooperate.
I used to run 22 minute 5K races until my major 2021 knee surgery.  I'm in the 26 minute range these days because it has been very difficult to get back to where I was.
