This story sounds like a really bad movie that I would have stopped watching 5 minutes in, but, being real life I have no idea what to think.

I remember KGB seeming like a big teddy bear

This is surprising to say the least. KGB always appeared like a solid community guy and strong in his faith. I remember him as being a strong converted Catholic. Some thing in him snapped along the way.  Maybe he lost it after his divorce.
