We just started The Queen's Gambit on Netflix.  So far it is pretty good.

That show is getting amazing reviews. But boy I would be lying if I said it was even remotely my type of show.

It's not a "chess" show.

It is a very well done character study of the girl/young woman at the center of the story. My wife loves it, and there's no way I could get her to watch anything that actually was about chess.

The main roles are acted very well, and the story is so interesting.

I honestly started watching The Queens Gambit because I was trying to get a nap in, and was looking for something to fall asleep to. Figured it looked boring enough. Ended up really liking it, and not falling asleep...

Agree, better than I expected. Is season 4 of the Crown starting tonight?

Oh yeah I totally get that. And eventually I will get to it. I am a big fan of good tv.

But it's not just the chess aspect. The period piece part of it and it being more of a straight drama character piece is less my style.

I stray more towards shows in the gritty vein of The Wire/Breaking Bad/The Shield. I don't need mindless violence, but obviously the darker street/drug empire type shows interest me more.

Finished it a few weeks ago.

I wasn't expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised. I would say it's a borderline Top 5 show that I watched this year.

I watched S1 of Westworld recently. I liked it, but wasn't blown away. Not sure if I want to move forward with S2. I vaguely recall hearing that it dropped off significantly, but don't recall hearing which season that happened. Anybody feel strongly (pro or con) about S2?

Two is pretty good.  Three is a drop off for me.  It becomes an action show instead of story driven IMO.

Just got current with Deutschland 89, also watching Des and Babylon Berlin up next.

We just starting watching "Lie to Me."  It is pretty good.  Aired on Fox 2009-2011 or so.

Huh. I had the exact opposite reaction, fwiw. I disliked season two, thought the writers fell a little too in love with the idea if confusing viewers with various timelines and the story suffered as a result. Season three was really good, IMO.

I'm finally getting to the last season of Homeland. It's very good, despite some of the nonsensical plotlines around Carrie.

I used to watch when it aired live.  Was upset when they did not renew after the few seasons it ran.

Did you watch the first episode of 89 (titled Kyrie Eleison)?

I've tried AT&T Now, AMC+, and Fubo to start watching this season and none of them show the first episode as available. They skip right to episode two as the first available watch option.

I can pirate a viewing of the first episode but, obviously, there are no English subtitles. Seems an odd issue and I'm just not sure if it's only me having it.

I remember that, fun show. I always enjoyed Tim Roth as an actor. Was disappointed when it was cancelled.

Finished Queen's Gambit. Enjoyed it very much.

Now turning to ... the queen, as we started The Crown tonight.

Season 4 so far is very good, but darker, but Tobias Menzies continues to KILL it as Philip. One of the highlights of the last 2 seasons for
me. Also, she has generally annoyed me post X-Files but Gillian Anderson is EXCELLENT as Thatcher

She's kinda had an interesting revitalization of her career. From Hannibal, Sex Education and now The Crown.

Some really excellent scenes with the queen and Thatcher.

Gillian's portrayal was excellent and reminded me why I disliked Thatcher so much. The Queen has a coldness because she was taught to be stoic. Thatcher had a coldness because that's what was in her heart.

On the whole, I think The Crown is as good as anything Netflix has done.
