Markus Howard's place in the record books
« on: July 08, 2019, 09:50:16 AM »
A look at where Markus could finish among the all-time career leaders in Division I men's basketball:

Scoring
2,721 points (assuming 766 points in 2019-20, or 22.5 ppg based on a 34-game schedule) would set a new Big East record and be the 20th highest career scoring total of all time. Some of the best-known names in the neighborhood include Allen Houston (#17 at 2,801 points), J.J. Reddick (#18 at 2,769) and Hank Gathers (#19 at 2,723).

3-Point Field Goals
433 three-pointers (assuming 120 three-point FG made in 2019-20, the same number he made last season) would smash Gerry McNamara's Big East record of 400 and be the 6th highest career total of all time. That would be more than Steph Curry (414) and the most by any high major player besides J.J. Reddick (457).

Free Throw Percentage
Based on his current career average (90.2%), Markus would finish 8th all-time. Garry Buchanan of Villanova holds the Big East record, making 91.3% from the line for his career.

I tell anyone who is interested in seeing a true college basketball talent in action should get a ticket to MU with Markus. Players who have such a well refined skill set  as Markus are not a frequent occurrence, especially at the high major level.

For the sake of comparison, only 4 other Marquette players rank among the career statistical leaders in Division I men's basketball history:

Andrew Rowsey's 404 career three-point field goals (which includes the 208 threes he made during his first two seasons at UNC-Asheville) is 13th most all time.

Steve Novak's 46.1% three-point field goal percentage is 9th best all time.

Tony Miller's 956 career assists and 7.77 assists per game average rank 8th and 11th all time, respectively.

Jim McIlvaine's 399 career blocks rank 22nd all time.

Good stuff, Marcus. I didn't know that Miller ranked so high on the assist lists.

I did not appreciate JJ as much as I should have while he was in college.

I apparently misspelled his name twice. It's "Redick," not "Reddick."
