Will Joey Get A Third Year At MSU?
« on: June 02, 2019, 02:13:43 PM »
As I understand it ...

You have five academic years to complete four athletic years/seasons for your team.  Joey already used a redshirt year when he came to campus by graduating high school early before his freshman year (the just-completed season). So he has already used two academic years so he has three academic years left.

When he sits out next year, he uses a third academic year leaving him with just two years/seasons of eligibility left at MSU.  That means he will have only played three seasons athletically out of a possible four.

Question ...

He will petition the NCAA to allow him an extra academic year to complete his fourth athletic year, thus getting a third athletic year at MSU.

Is there any chance the NCAA says no?  Have they ever said no in these circumstances?  What is the point of the rule if everyone gets an exemption?

Think it's a moot point. Think he will go pro in two years anyway.

He does not meet the stated criteria for a Five-Year Rule Waiver.

The NCAA makes odd decisions that trump their own bylaws quite often.

Anything is possible.

I honestly don’t care, but Joey doesn’t seem like the sort to stick around if things get difficult.

Things were great at SPASH when he was playing and winning championships, but as soon as he got hurt, he gowne.

Things were great at MU through mid-February, then we started losing and he started pouting, and then he gowne.

If they win championships at MSU, he might stick around...but if things go south, he probably gowne.

I thought Haanif got a waiver. I cannot see Joey not getting one.

Two different scenarios. Haanif played two years and five games for Marquette. He then transferred to FGCU. He received a hardship waiver due to his family which he moved closer to. the NCAA ruled that due to the hardship he got to play first semester of that year instead of December and didn’t need to sit out.  That is the waiver he received.

He then reinjured his shoulder ending his junior year. He then grad transferred to Nebraska.  He will have used up his eligibility in 5 years.

Joey on the other hand red shirted the second semester of his freshman year using up a year of eligibility. He played one year for MU and then transferred further from home. He will need to sit for 1 year. He will then play two years at MSU which means he will have had five years to play 3 seasons.  I doubt the NCAA rules the hardship was the cause for his transfer so he will need to sit.  He would then need to petition for a sixth season stating that his freshman year injury would should not be counted against him.

I don’t think that is as clean cut as he was injured prior to joining the team.  The NCAA might accept it but I wouldn’t be surprised if Izzo ushers him out for greener pastures. If Joey gets to the sixth year and hasn’t shown NBA scouts he is ready then he won’t be and Izzo would be able to pull in someone who can.

He did not get a Five Year Rule Waiver, which is what Joey would eventually need (can't apply until five years are up). He doesn't qualify by rule because he will not have missed two years due to 'circumstances outside of his control' (e.g., injury in year 1 would count, but choosing to transfer would not... unless there's some huge story we're unaware of).

Haani was a class of 2015 kid. This will be his 5th year of college. Doesn't need a waiver.

When he 'announced' he was done playing college basketball, I noted that he should be fine playing one more year of college.. and that's how things have turned out.

At any rate, completely different situations and relevant bylaws in play when comparing Haani and Joey.
Thanks for ruining summer, Canada.
