Well, December has really come in with a bang.  Milwaukee is under a BLIZZARD warning, and Marquette has CLOSED.  Expect all Basketball forums to be BUSY today!

I went to bed thinking I'd take a snow day .. fortunately, I can telecommute, so mailed it in pretty early.

Snow should stop between 1-3pm, so I imagine the roads will be plowed for the games at the BC tonight.

I don't know the last time Marquette closed .. I do remember in 1987 during Finals week, we had a snowstorm that closed us down.  Man, that was fun.

December, 1987.....I missed Fr. Donnelly's Western Civ final - - gladly took the 'B' rather than re-take the final in January.

I missed my Calc final.  IIRC (cough cough) I had an A going into it, so had nothing to gain and everything to lose.  Kinda like playing UWM. ;D

NYWarrior

ha!

I hadnt done any prep for the donnelly final.....and was maddeningly unmotivated.  The snow saved me, no doubt.  I recall McCormick emptying out around midnight and folks being in the snow for most of the night.  A good time!

MU closed in January of 1994 I believe.. not because of snow.. but because of 2 days of -80 degree windchills.  At least with snow you can go outside and go places.. 2 minutes outside in -80 windchill frostbite starts to set in.  Talk about boring.  Plus it was at the beginning of the semester so it's not like we even had bigger projects that the extra time would help for yet.  MU had a tough decision to close.. even did a quick study to find out generally the worst case amount of time a student had to be outside getting to/from class (assuming the passed through any buildings that were on the way) and found it to be like 3 minutes so they reluctantly shut down - I remember it was a big deal.

Wow, Marquette is getting soft. They didn't even close school back in 1995 when the temperature was below zero. It was pretty bad that day. I remember walking to Cudahy from McCormick and thinking about transfering to a school somewhere in Arizona or California.

Hm, in my tenure, I think it was Jan/Feb 1994?  Marquette closed for one day because it was like -80 degrees (wiith windchill) outside.  Not really fun, it was too cold to do anything.  The funny thing, it was like -79 the following day, and things were running again.  Good thing we had the 1 degree heat wave kick through ::)

That must be the same storm that dumped 16" inches at vail a couple days ago (but only 4" down here).  Guess I'll have to ski this weekend  ;D

The Lens

You're right, I think it was the Tuesday after MLK day.  They said it was too cold to go outside and they made the annoucement on that Monday night, so what did myself & 6 guys from my floor do?  We walked from McCormick to Avenue Liquors (Dany's & Kampus were closed I believe or it was an ID thing).  The whole time as I'm risking life and limb for a couple 40s of Mickey's...all I could think was...I'm walking 10 blocks for beer b/c I can drink all night b/c my school said its too cold to walk 4 blocks to class.

God I miss college.

I think last time MU cancelled classes was Sept. 11, but for weather, I believe December 2000 during Finals Week.

I got the head start from Chicago last night and drove up to crash with a friend.  Nothing started falling 'til about 3AM of so after I got home from the bar. Milwaukee streets are an absoulte mess, but it's going to be pushing off in the next two or so hours.  So hopefully by tonight, everyone can get here for the game.

Back in my 1st senior year (2001) we had a bad snowstorm during Finals week, the Finals weren't cancelled by my Econ teacher, Peter Toumanoff.  But, he showed up an hour late and still made us take the final.  It was a 6 question final, but shortened it to 3 question that he got to choose (of course the hardest ones) . Alot of other teachers rescheduled there final, but not good ole Toumanoff   >:(

BTW, this looks like a cool board, GO MU

This leads me to a question.  Anybody know if the other 3 teams are already in town?  If not, they may have problems getting there by tonight.

We didn't get off the second day b/c the Board of Trustees were meeting - we most likely would have been off a second day had it not been for that.  I went to UWM the night before we closed for the UWM-MU women's game and I recall it being very cold.  I remember going to one of my classes on Thursday that first week and the teacher complaining that we were already far behind from missing that Tue. when the university was closed - that teacher had way too much planned on the first day of class to already be behind...

The 87 snow messed me up.  I was supposed to meet the the owners of a couple of bars and interview them for a project for my journalism class.   I had a hellacious time getting the video equipment from Johnston hall, then I schlepped it through the snow,  saw my girlfriend in a snoball fight with a couple of her guy friends, had her get mad at me because I didn't set the equipment down to help her, and then had the bar owners not show up due to the weather.   So much for my final grade in THAT class.    Ahhhhh,  memories.......

I was pissed that day in 1987.  I didn't have any finals that day.

They closed School for THIS...http://www.marquette.edu/cam/

I recall back in the mid 90s when it was closed due to the cold, myself and a friend pulled the short sticks and had to go on the beer run.  I have never in my life been that cold, my contacts froze to my eyes!  When we got back to Schroeder , we made no attempt to hide the beer and the desk person let us right in as if to say "if you were crazy enough to go out there, you deserve a beer!"

The trade off of course is not being able to go to the games.  But I had breakfast outside here this morning.

Yeah, I'd bitch too if it wasn't a freakishly warm 70 degrees here. ;D

I also didn't have a final during that Dec. '87 snowstorm. If that storm could'a held out one more day I would've avoided my biggest nemisis sophomore year — !Spanish!  >:(

I remember that closure... we all bitched about how we'd freeze if we went outside to go to class but as soon as class was cancelled, we headed to the bars!!  Ohhh those were the days!!
