What is the Definition of SOTG?

After every win, we have a thread to pick SOTG.

So, what is SOTG?

Is it the guy that was most productive?

Or, is it the guy that outperformed expectations?

So, let's take the X game, as one example.

If the criteria is the most productive player that game, then we can have a discussion about Sam and/or Markus.

If the criteria is which player outperformed expectations, it is hands down Matt Heldt.  In fact, under this criteria, Heldt's performance at X might be SOT-year.

I'm not trying to start a second thread about who was SOTG of the X game.  We have that already.

Rather, I'm asking under what criteria do you make your decision to pick one ... production or expectations?

Eye test.  Matt was great, and we don't win without him, but Joey hit however many consecutive 3's in the first half, and Markus had the biggest impact in crunch time.  Matt may have had the play of the game, getting that board and kick to Sam, but you still can't give it to a guy that only had 2 points, and fouled out in 20 min.

I appreciate the loosey goosey, go with your gut feel of SOTG selection. It leads to some great threads rehashing the highlights of our most recent wins and how multiple players contributed to them. Sometimes there is a stand-alone SOTG, which is great, but it is also great when we have multiple players who contributed either by stuffing the stat sheet or in their "well above expectation" level of play like we had in the X game. A hard and fast definition might make it easier to pick, but it could also take away from the  discussion as far as who really is the SOTG.

We have a problem, three outstanding players who all contribute every game.  In most games to pick the SOTG is splitting hairs between equals. 
This dilemma might be best solved by picking the SOTO, stud of the others, 5th or 6th or 7th man.
Throw darts to pick the SOTG and debate the SOTO.

This is how I've always looked at it too. Outperforming expectations is worth noting, but when expectations are low, as they are for basically everyone relative to Markus and Sam, then just stepping over the low bar over-amplifies what was actually a mediocre game by all other standards.

We have a guy on our team who is showing up in pretty much every NPOY conversation at this point in the year. Expectations are very high for him. When he plays up to expectations, he's probably the best guy on the floor and worthy of the SOTG traveling trophy.

We also have several guys who are very good at playing a specific role. When they do that to perfection, there's still a good chance they weren't the biggest contributor for our team. It's not a knock to them; we just happen to have 2 exceptionally talented players in Markus and Sam. In my eyes, if a guy like Jamal plays 15 minutes and has a stat line of 8/5/3, he's exceeding expectations, but that's not going to earn him an SOTG nod.

I would add that you also have to matter to the outcome of the game.  So Buddy does not make this cut.

This year, most of the time, Markus Howard is the definition of SOTG.

But "biggest impact" still leaves a lot of room for judgment.

Is it getting the most points, rebounds and other stats? Is it shutting down the opposing team's best player? Is it calming the guys down in the huddle when things are going sideways? Is it hitting those two or three shots that completely change the momentum, even if those are the only two or three shots he hits?

Like I said, I know it when I see it...and it isn't always point and rebound totals.
