Match-ups against Buffalo?

Buffalo starts 4 guards (6-1, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3) and a forward (6-10).  Are we going to insert Chartouny in our starting lineup or are Sam/Joey going to guard a 6-3 guard? We really could have used Elliot in this game.  I think we are going to see more Chartouny.  We will really need to control turnovers.

Greg would have definitely helped as another body to throw at Massinburg.

We'll see how MU has grown since Indiana. I'm imagining they'll share some similarities with the defensive game plan.

I think we see a lot of small ball in this game to cope with their 5 out offense.

Joey I think gets big minutes and stays on Perkins. If Joey can give him same treatment he gave Dean Wade that takes a big weapon away from them. Ed probably spells him if anybody.

Sammy matches up with Jeremy Harris. He's had a rough shooting start to the year but he shot 42% from deep last season with over 90 makes. This season he is shooting 26% from deep but take away his 4/5 performance against D2 LeMoyne and its an even worse 22%. Can't let this be the game he finds his stroke.

Sacar will get the tall task of slowing down CJ Massingurg. This is the matchup I am most unsure about because the guy is just beast of a player. He has a triple double on the season and his two biggest games were against the two biggest opponents (@West Virginia and @Cuse). I think he will get his but if Sacar can just slow him down that would be huge.

I think Markus gets Jayvon Graves. He's the fourth scoring option but has big game potential with three games of 16 points or more already. Do to him what he did to Trice and keep him from going off.

Finally I'd put Joe on Davonta Jordan. I know Joe had a rough go of it last night but Jordan is the floor general and is prone to some sloppy turnovers. If Joe can channel his inner steals leader of the last two seasons it could completely throw off their offense.

I'm not worried about our ability to stop their half court offense. It's our offense that will win or lose the game for us. We will have a lot of opportunities to create mismatches with this team. We will have a massive height advantage on the wing. This would be the perfect game for Jamal of Bailey to find their stroke from deep. If they don't, run ball switches until you can get one of the Hauser boys matched up on one of their 6"3 wings and fire away. I would try to establish Ed early and often. If he can get some fouls on Perkins then I don't think Buffalo will have the horses to keep up.

I think Buffalo is a lot more similar to Kansas State than Indiana. Sharpshooting 5, undersized 4 who also shoots threes, four guards 6'4" or shorter that play the 1-3, veteran team, focus on forcing turnovers and scoring in transition.

I kinda relish the idea of a pair of 6'3" guards trying to guard Joey and Sam in the post. Buffalo only goes 7 deep, so if we can get a couple of their key players in early foul trouble, a la K-State, it would be big.

Buffalo doesn't like working against a half court defense....they can do it no doubt but they'd much rather operate in transition. So the key in my mind is actually MU's offense. If Buffalo is taking the ball out from under the basket a lot more than not I think MU wins comfortably. The key is going to be being patient and working the mismatches that will no doubt there there on the offensive side of the ball......if we win, I think someone named Hauser will be SOTG.

I think you mean McRae. Perkins is 250 lbs.

Buffalo is actually pretty good on the offensive glass but they also give up a lot of offensive boards as well. I would say we have the advantage on the glass.

They tore Syracuse up on the offensive and defensive glass. The zone probably impacts that, but I thought Cuse's length would help them do better rebounding.

On the flip side, since we're much bigger/taller and more comfortable in the half court, if we play our usual lineup, or even go bigger with 2 of Theo/Ed/Brendan/Jamal in together often, we could kill them in the paint. Rather than try to adjust our game to theirs, forcing them to go up against an area where we're much stronger should work well.

Personally, I'd love to see a game in the 130-135 point range with plenty of deliberate half court sets. Let Sam and Joey show off those post moves against smaller wings, feed Ed and Theo a ton, and force Buffalo away from their strengths.

Syracuse may just not be a good rebounding team.
They've also been outrebounded this year by UConn (46-32), Oregon (35-28), Ohio State (31-29), Georgetown (45-34) and Old Dominion (38-33).
The teams they've outrebounded are Eastern Washington, Morehead, Colgate, Cornell and Northeastern. Not exactly murderer's row.

UW does not attack the ball in its defense.  Most of MUs early TOs last night were steals in the lane by ND.  A real concern Friday night.

I think it is possible Jamal gets a few more minutes against Buffalo. Buffalo ran their top 6 guys big minutes against Syracuse . Jamal can provide fresh legs off the bench and length/ defense. Which could be beneficial at the right time. Having him in there with Ed and Bailey could be interesting.

Isn't that often a function of zone defenses, that they don't rebound as well as man-to-man teams?

Yes it will determine who wins Friday - turnovers will be the game.  We do not have great ball handlers in the team so must protect it more on Friday.  Go Marquette!
