On the other hand, he made $5 million a year coaching in the NBA (twice what he was making at Iowa State), gets to kick back on the couch and chill for the next four months, and can practically have his pick of college openings in the spring.
I don't think he regrets it.

If DePaul were smart, they'd go after Hoiberg tomorrow.  He's exactly the type of coach that could move the needle there with his style of play and willingness to take on transfers.

However DePaul isn't smart.

So my guess is that he succeeds Richard Pitino at Minnesota.

I would agree with you if Hoiberg wasn't dragged through the Chicago sports media mud for the last two seasons.

Yep, spot on. Plus, he can now get a better job than Iowa State, without ditching his Alma mater for another school.

Took over an ISU program that had gone 59-68 with zero tourney appearances under Greg McDermott. After a 16-16 season, he went 99-40 over the next four years, with four straight NCAA invites.

That compares pretty favorably with what Alford did at Iowa and Howland at Pitt.

In that respect, it reminds me of when Lon Kruger left Illinois to go to the Atlanta Hawks. I couldn't figure out for the life of me why the Hawks wanted him (at least Hoiberg to the Bulls made some sense), but he got some nice coin and then returned to college hoops when he felt like it.

Well I never thought Alford was a good hire for them.  But Howland was a west coast guy who arguably was more successful at Pitt than Hoiberg was at ISU.

I guess I can see him there though.
