The last time MU played at Assembly Hall
« on: November 14, 2018, 02:41:18 PM »
March 17, 1985.  NIT.  MU lost in 2 OT, finishing the game with 4 players on the floor, including 5'8 walk-on Willie Hines.  Bobby Knight owned the officials that night.
Even Sultan would have blamed the officials that game

I was there.  We got hosed.  Majerus told me (and he put it in his book) that Mandy Johnson wanted to know as they came out of the huddle after our 5th guy fouled out if we "were still in a box and one!!!"
someone with a better memory would have to tell us who we were manning up on??

Did some googling on this and found the following Chicago Tribune article on the game.

https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-1985-03-25-8501160864-story.html

"Even when they were in trouble, Knight`s Hoosiers somehow seemed predestined to win. Several key decisions by the officials went in favor of Indiana, perhaps leading Knight to say: ''I think that out of the five best officiated games we`ve had this season, three of them have come in the NIT.'' At one point during the first overtime, Knight was so elated with a call that he patted an official on the back.

When asked about the 36 personal fouls called against Marquette to 21 on Indiana, coach Rick Majerus said: ''I don`t officiate the games, I coach the games.''

Marquette guard Mandy Johnson said: ''It just goes to show you what kind of tournament the NIT is. We knew after the first overtime that there was no way we could get out of here a winner. There`s no doubt that Bobby Knight intimidates the officials.''"

A group of us from McCormick took the road trip there as well.    Besides getting completely "knighted", we drove back thinking two overwhelming thoughts...first, that Tom Copa had a breakout performance and was going to be one of the best big men in the country the next year and second, the program was on the rise back toward national prominence.   Wow, were we wrong....in just a few short years I graduated having never beaten ND (0-8 from 1984-88) and watching Dukiet coach D-3 level talent.

I worked out my frustrations by doing shots of Jack.   A bad night.

fast forward to 1995 and Willie Hines was escorting me and classmates into our local voting hall around 17th & Highland saying:

"Hines, Hines, don't forget Hines.  I played at Marquette!"
