With all the hype coming into this season, I wanted to take another look at the prediction contest. In years past it seemed like there was a large time commitment involved in tabulating/calculating the results, which would slowly lead to a large backlog of prediction contest posts that someone had to spend an afternoon totaling up.

I thought it would be a fun off-season project to try and automate the pain points with the prediction contest, so I wrote a Node js script to 'scrape' all of the user comments on a given post, determine who had the closest (or exact) prediction for a given question, and total the results. The script takes about 10 seconds to determine all the winners for a given post (not including me looking up and entering in the box score results).

The format should look very familiar, but I added a few more rules to help the automation process:

• Copy/paste the exact format in the original post
• All answers must be written next to the question being asked (to the right of the colon)
• If a question asks for a player name, do not use nicknames (use a combination of player first and/or last name)
  
  
  • Acceptable: Markus, Howard, Markus Howard, or MHoward
  • Unacceptable: M2N, MH, #0, etc.
• Do not 'Quote' another users prediction

So I know there are no nicknames, what about misspellings? 

Good question! I'm using levenshtein distance to measure how far off two words are from one another. It's set up so that for questions involving player names you can be off by 2 characters and it would still consider it correct. For example if you guessed 'Hawrd' instead of 'Howard' it would be marked as a correct guess because it takes only two edits to get you from one string to another.
