Which returning player leads MU in assists?

I couldn't find many previous examples of a Marquette forward posting at least 100 assists. You have to go back more than 30 years. Mike Flory (more of a G/F hybrid at 6-5) had 112 assists (3.9 apg) in 1986-87. Kerry Trotter topped 100 assists in two seasons: 1985-86 (120/4.0 apg) and 1983-84 (133/4.4 apg).

The 1972-73 Marquette Warriors were a unique team, with five players (including forwards Larry McNeill and Maurice Lucas) averaging at least 2.5 assists per game. Only point guard Allie McGuire accumulated 100 assists, though, because the team played just 29 games.

I couldn't find anything resembling reliable statistics on assists before 1967-68. Needless to say, Sam already ranks among the best passing forwards in school history.

I think you run the danger of this becoming like a "20-win season" when in the past you didn't play as many games...

Call JjJ what you want, but he had a higher assist rate a couple of years ago...

Jamil Wilson had a higher assist rate in 2013-14.. didn't play in as many games or as many minutes, and that team scored a lot less than this the 2017-18 Warriors..

So, 100 looks like a nice rounded number, but not sure it's very relevant.

All true, which was the reason for calling out assists per game. Certainly not a deep insight. An assist isn't a strictly objective statistic in the first place; it's up to the judgment of the scorer. But it does confirm the way Sam always looks for teammates and the right play. He has the potential to be a historically great player at MU.

Sam is a good bet. Always seems to see the whole floor, and is willing to pass up a good shot to get it to a teammate for a great one.

Totally agree. He's up there with Jimmy, Crowder, Wes, and Diener as the smartest players I've seen in an MU uni. Lethal efficiency.

Didn't mean it as a grammar police thing, simply that I don't expect the leader to be a returning player.

Of the players that are returning, I expect it to be Markus. Our roster makeup will likely allow Sam to get a bit more rest than in the past (Cain, Joey, Morrow, Bailey, and Anim all have positional overlap with him. We don't have as much guard depth, so while I don't expect anyone to hit the 30 mpg threshold, I do think of returning players, Markus will be out there the most and he's had a higher assist rate than Sam in each of their two seasons.

His raw assists will go down because he won't get near the 36 minutes a game he got at Fordham. But I expect his assist rate to skyrocket. He didn't have nearly the quality of weapons to pass to that he will at Marquette.
