This really seems like an odd fit — guess at this point in Creans career a job is a job.

Agree.  It seems away from his recruiting base and at a football first, second and third school.  I think he would have been better to wait.

This is such a poor fit for Crean, IMO.  He has zero experience coaching in the South.  He rarely recruited in the South.  He will be going up against coaches like Calipari, Pearl, Johnson, White, C. Martin, F. Martin and Rick Barnes - all of whom have established pedigree in the area.  That is a pretty impressive conference, coaching-wise, and it has gotten really competitive in the past few years.  I know that the family moved to Florida after his dismissal last year, but I really don't see this as a fit.  Hope I'm wrong.

I think Crean was itching to get back into coaching after a year off, and didn't think there would be any other jobs opening up.  Louisville still needs to make a hire (which would open up another job).  So does Pittsburgh.  Very puzzling choice.

Louisville would have never gone after Crean.  Pitt may have been a better job possibly, but he's getting $18M over six years.  Not sure what the buy-out is, but he's good enough to hang on there for at least four or five years.  And if he get's fired, he can go back to television.

This is like Buzz going to Va Tech.  The expectations are low enough that a couple tournament appearances are going to make him look real good in their eyes.

No, I know Louisville wasn't going to go after Crean.  My point was that Louisville is likely to hire another head coach from another program, which would then cause another opening.  The coaching carousel is not done, and will likely continue spinning for the next several weeks.

I mean I get that, but $18 M in a high major conference isn't a bad offer.

He must know Pearl is going down, otherwise he'd never go to a place where he's forced to play him 1-2 times per year.

Agree. $3M a year for a coach who got fired a year ago is a solid offer.

It's significantly more than Wojo gets paid. And I'll be shocked if he gets anywhere close to the results we do starting next year onward.

Maybe he views being at a football school as a plus at this point. MU and IU are both all about hoops, which was exactly what he was looking for back then. But now that he's done that - and had a bad ending at IU - perhaps he likes the idea of playing third fiddle behind UGa football and UGa spring football. If he wins big, he could turn a so-so hoops school into a power. If he doesn't, it isn't viewed nationally as a huge failure.

And as sultan said, $18M isn't bad for a program with modest expectations.

Georgia made the NCAA tournament twice in 9 years under Mark fox, and once in 6 years. That’s 3 NCAA’s in 15 years. On the surface Crean can get them more frequent, if uneven, NCAA trips. It’s a football school with far less pressure than his previous stops. Seems to be a win/win at first glance.

He'll be fine.  He's at a state school, he's going to get some of those kids and some of those kids is A LOT.  And the school has minimal expectations.  And Athens is a great place to live, especially as you inch towards retirement.

If he goes to Pitt he's going to be compared to the possibility of Sean Miller and he's in a town that doesn't own the state or even always the area for recruiting.  AND you can get to the top of the SEC a lot easier than you can in the ACC, even with the plethora of good coaches now in the SEC.

if he can keep Atlanta area kids in state, he will do well.  There is a ton of talent in the area, not to mention the Carolinas.

I agree with you. My comment was supposed to say and once out of 6 years under Dennis Felton prior to that. Accidentally left off Felton’s name. My bad. But the point is the same.

Georgia fans are excited to see the school hire Crean. Will be interesting to see what he learned during his year away from coaching. This should be a good opportunity for him. First item on his agenda should be to try and bring Ashton Hagans back in the fold .

Maybe he can trick Hagans into thinking he is, in fact, Mark Fox to keep his commitment

They care at Georgia and Pitt.    Think about it.   They believe that Crean is the answer to their problems.

He turned around MU program treading water, he rebuilt a devastated by sanctions and scandal Indiana program.  He is worth it.

His family is already living in Florida so it's an easy move. I wonder if Riley will play baseball at UGA now. He's a very good prospect and was drafted by the White Sox.  Played at IMG this past year.

I am now a UGA fan.

While Crean's recruiting base at Indiana was the Midwest, he recruited players from across the South: Missouri, Texas, Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky, Florida, Alabama, and yes, Georgia.
