if anyone was going to get an accounting joke I thought it would be you.

I got the terminology; just didn't realize it was supposed to be a joke.  There are some on this board who would have said it completely seriously.
Have some patience, FFS.

Any idea why they call them "free" throws?  Unlike 2pt FG attempts and 3pt FG attempts, the shooter of a free throw is standing still.  From 15 feet.  Every time.  Easily practiced.  Easily perfected.  Team FT shooting percentage is always higher than is a teams FG and 3 pt FG shooting percentage.

To miss your freebies, is giving away easily earned points.

This continues to be the absolute dumbest talking point on this board.

I totally get how the original position evolved from FTsnomatta, to okay, FT Rate matta.  Ftsnomatta was a dumb statement to begin with.  Of course all kind of factors matter that go into winning, to discount FTs as one component is simply dumb.

Feel free to carry on supporting this silly hashtag.

The hashtag is used symbolically to counter the belief that FT% is an important factor in winning basketball games.  It's never been meant to be taken literally.

Ahhhh a Eureka moment.  Now I get it.  A team can shoot 0-20 from the FT Line and it wouldn't matta.  Cool.

Can you clarify on the symbolism of hashtags on MU Scoop?  Is that a new form of teal?  Perhaps a cousin?

Yeah, well, if Wojo would pull off anyone's redshirt for an NIT game I'd move over to the Fire Wojo crowd.

I'm totally amused with this Sultan.  I find it comical.  0-20 FT shooting no matta.  You know why?  Because Ft% no matta.  BRILLIANT!

Yeah I think tower's got the right idea.  On ignore you go.

No that is not why they are called free throws.

I disagree with your viewpoint, or I cannot rebut it, so therefore, I must place you on ignore.  To read your viewpoints is simply too traumatic.  #soft.

Don't ask me why I'm contributing to this conversation. This is Basketball 101. Free throws aren't called "free" because the points should be automatic. Even the best free throw shooters miss free throws. According to the NCAA men's basketball rule book:

"A free throw is the privilege given to a player to score one point by an unhindered try for goal from within the free-throw semicircle and behind the free-throw line."

The attempt is "free."

Right...and when you miss "unhindered" standing still shots in basketball...that the average team converts at 70% - which is much higher than both 2pt and 3pt FG%, it is costly to miss those free throws.

It started as a twitta hashtag. No % allowed in twitta hashtags which is how it was shortened to #FTnomatta

Honest question, has there ever been a game where a D1 team shot 0-20 from the line?

Dunno ... but I covered an NBA game in which Tim Hardaway went 0-for-17 from the floor ... and the Warriors still smoked the Timberwolves!
