The title of the thread is that the NIT will have some competitive teams in it this year, due to the fact parity in college basketball has risen over the years.  The title didn't make any notation of the status of MU's program, why things (whatever a thing is) are bad and your opinion is well known based on the endless number of times you have posted your thoughts in many other threads.

Are many MU fans upset over the fact they did not receive a bid to the NCAA, sure.  But as been in the past, posters go simply ballistic, the name calling starts, the bringing up of posts made years ago, the Buzz comparisons, on and on.

The NIT is not the NCAA, but at least the players continue their season and can, as a group continue to play in a tournament atmosphere which will hopefully benefit them in the long run.  I would also hope the fans and the true posters on this board will champion behind these young kids as they play it forward.

This is a good post.

I would take the Rick SLU program right now.

Very well stated.

Go Marquette!

We can win it.  As long as we're not one of the teams that plays it apathetically and bows out after the first game at home.

Wow. Maybe we can win the NIT!

Say what you want about the NIT, but I don't see a ton of value in barely making the NCAAs or play-in game and getting bounced in the first round.  We should beat Harvard, but Oregon is a really solid team and would be a good experience for a young team.  Not where we wanted to be but pretty much what I expected at the start of the year and I'd love to see us go on a run to New York.

Some people here seem to think it's our God given right to be ranked in the top 25 and a high seed in the NCAAs every year.  It's just not that easy.

NIT possible opponents and KenPom (in our bracket):

(seed)Team - Overall, Offense, Defense
(2)Marquette - 53, 13, 176
(7)Harvard - 114, 243, 64
(3)Oregon - 76, 76, 80
(6)Rider - 139, 95, 199
(1)ND - 31, 28, 63
(8)Hampton - 246, 240, 257
(4)Penn State - 29, 57, 21
(5)Temple - 86, 100, 88

Some good quality opponents in there (Oregon, ND, Penn State). Should only help the youngins out to get more high-quality competition.

Good point. You could argue while an NCAA tourney bid is better for us fans, an NIT run is better for the players. Hope we don't squander it and get bounced early

Actually, Tony was my first choice while at WSU.

Tough blow tonight for Tony.  He is an outstanding coach, but this will follow him the rest of his life.  No other way to say it.  Goes to show that anything, absolutely anything can happen in the NCAA tournament.  You can be #1, have the overall #1 seed, and it doesn't matter.  All it takes is 40 minutes of bad basketball to erase months of great basketball.  Anything can happen.

Does he start reaching out to UWGB before the flight or after he lands? Career is over, stink will never get out of this.

Love March Madness.  Feel great for the Retrievers, feel terrible for Bennett and Virginia.   Imagine that Virginia is the program to have the two biggest upsets ever.  Chaminade and now 16 v 1.

Maybe worth a new thread - but another #1 NIT seed looking to go away.  Baylor currently down pretty big to Miss St.

Mr. Nielsen

Baylor is back in it. 7 point game early in the 3 quarter.

Tale of 2 halves I guess.  Or is that 4 quarters.  Damnit...

Oldgym

Miss St beats Baylor on a buzzer beating three that will remind you of the one Kris Jenkins hit to win the national title a couple years ago.

rocky_warrior

Baylor fought back to take a ~10 pt lead.  But Miss St. comes back and beats them with a miracle 3 at the buzzer.  Much like the Michigan game yesterday. (but the underdog won)
