It's why I said he was missed last night to spell Andy at the 1.  Markus.

Markus is probably the better option over Greg right now, but even he isn't a great choice. He'll have to work on his ballhandling and court vision big time this summer to be an effective PG next year. He's been prone to picking up his dribble in bad spots and moving with his head down too often. I think he can get there, but I think he's more effective at the 2.

If last night was a bit of an audition for Greg, then I'd have to say it didn't go so well. Maybe he'll have another opportunity on Saturday, and hopefully he can show a little more confidence with the ball. Like Markus, I think he can get there, but it'll take some work.

I thought it pretty funny when I looked at the order of the threads on the Al page:

...

"Who would you start at PG next year?"

"Froling?"

You joke, but he may be the best passer on next years team

It's a no-brainer if between Markus and Greg:  Markus.  No reason Markus doesn't start at PG next year.  Personally, I'm becoming less concerned about us landing a grad transfer PG.  Think Elliott can get the job done for 5-10 minutes a game next year when Markus is getting a rest.

Really like the idea of Cain and Elliott getting a lot of minutes/further experience next year (which would be minimized if we bring in grad transfer PG)  Risk of course with not landing a grad transfer PG is if Markus gets injured - we would be in major trouble.

A grad transfer.

Markus backs him up.  Greg backs up Markus at the 2.

Greg is a very good passer when he is able to catch the ball on the move on the wing and get into the lane.  He did not look comfortable being the primary ball handler trying to initiate the offense.

Greg Elliott. I'd rather have Markus play shooting guard.

Agree. We have seen little to suggest either can play point.

If I had to pick one, it would be Elliott...after a summer of working endlessly to improve his PG skills.  Markus has gotten huge minutes for two straight years, and still hasn't shown the skillset.  If either is likely to dramatically improve over the summer, I'd put my money on the frosh who is still just showing us the tip of the iceberg.

If we don't see some marked improvement, next year could be frustrating.

Disagree with almost this entire string.
Greg is basically wearing a cast, yet has more length, blow by speed and athleticism to dribble penetrate.  He also looks to pass he had a couple really nice assists last night.  The wrap around, where he basically had his head almost torn off and no call, showed the length, athleticism and cOurt vision Howard has heretofore not demostrated.
Now should we talk about defense and negating  initial dribble penetration or do we want the opposing pg at tge block/charge arc all next year.
He had two turnovers last night the first one he jyst rushed and the second he lofted over theo by a few inches.  None were of the stripped, dribble off his leg , fumble of the markus variety.
Markus is a 12 inches shorter Steve Novak, he can shoot period

He can't even dribble with his off hand! You guys are unbelievable. He's not a PG, not close to a PH. Maybe when he's an upper classmen.

Greg handles the ball about 1/50th of the amount of time Markus does.  My guess is if Greg was asked to handle the ball as much as Markus has been, he'd also turn the ball over a lot given that he might be skinnier than me and he'd get bumped off of his spot constantly.

Also, you realize that teams aren't required to match up defensively with the same player that is defending them, right?  Or that a point guard can't guard the opposing team's shooting guard, right?

Yes. The only player younger than Markus is Jamal.

I'm hoping our starting PG for next year isn't on the roster yet.

AZMarqfan

Howard really struggles bringing the ball up against a defender.  He also needs to work on creating shots for others.  I really love that he added the floater this year (that shot was what killed us last year as South Carolina had 7 or 8 floaters that looked like awful shots, yet all fell).

Howard can improve as a ball-handler and defender.  right now he's sub-par at both.

The off hand is the injured hand. He is playing one handed.

If he's not, we're likely going to start two small guards again with Markus playing the 2.

I'd almost prefer Markus was handed the reigns and allowed to approve with the great amount of talent around him.
