Wait, Purdue is good?   Next thing you know, someone is going to try to say that  Xavier is a top 10 team, Villanova is #1, and the three road games Marquette has lost are to teams 31-1 at home.

Nah, it's more fun to say we stink and reminisce about the one that got away.

As JB has said time and again, you can find small sample sizes and specific situations where FT matter.  But a lot has to happen to even get to that point.  #ftnomatta really means "ft are not statistically significant" but no matta sounds better.

Its overall FT % that JB addresses.  Obviously there are many situations when FTs do matter.

hard to get at meaningful data when an individual player or team with poor or great FT shooting changes the game in so many other ways.  always interesting to match quantitative and qualitative data....i think qualitative data would show that most coaches do practice free throws, most coaches do game plan against teams and individual players based upon their ability to shoot free throws, and most coaches are situational with their own players given their free throw abilities.

nothing happens in a vacuum.  so many people running around that have never gotten results doing the job...touting that they have data that those getting results should be using.  the art is in knowing how to apply the data, and understanding there is plenty of bias and circular references in most quantitative data.

I have been to dozens of basketball practices across a couple of universities and never once have I seen a coach have a team practice free throws.

Sure, they don't have them do it as a team, but wouldn't it be expected that the guys are in the gym doing that on their own? Why waste the time of all 12 guys at once to do something they can do with no instruction on their own? I'm not sure the fact that it's not included in team practice is indicative of it not being important. I haven't been around high level basketball, so I could be way offer, but that just seems logical to me.

FT% to team success is like the windshield to the car.

There are more important things in determining the chances of that car getting you from point A to point B.

But occasionally, especially on these brisk January mornings, that windshield comes in handy.

I think it depends upon how one defines "practice free throws."

The HS team for which I am an assistant coach is No. 2 in the entire state. We're good. Our coach is great.

We never "practice free throws" if one defines that as, "OK ladies, I want everybody to take a ball, go to a basket and shoot 20 free throws."

But we incorporate pressure-when-tired free throws into numerous drills. We'll have the girls run full-court drills for 10 minutes non-stop, and then the team that "lost" the drill can avoid having to run a "loser's lap" if one of its players can hit 2 FTs. A lot of stuff like that.

I think that is a way to practice FTs without actually practicing them, and I am quite certain other coaches - from middle school up to colleges - do stuff like that all the time.

And as another poster said, I believe college players shoot FTs on their own quite often.

Threads here turn into arguments in one way or an other. FT's are one of the true legends here. We need the meme tournament back!
