This Is How Big A Deal The The Hawaii Missile Scare Was
« on: January 19, 2018, 06:30:26 AM »
Hawaiian Pornhub traffic fell 77% when they thought atomic annihilation was imminent.  (Does that mean 23% were fine with their last act on earth watching porn).  Then it spiked 48% when the all-clear was sounded.

Pornhub Says Traffic Went Limp During Missile Scare, Then Surged With Relief
Few want to spend their last minutes alone, apparently

As you can see, traffic hit a low point of 77 percent below average shortly after the alert. After a follow-up alert let let residents know the warning was in error, users drifted back to Pornhub.

Of course, one of the most telling facts is that site traffic skyrocketed to 48 percent above average almost exactly an hour after the false warning. Clearly Hawaii residents were in need of relief—or just wanted to celebrate having more time on their hands.

“We can’t begin to imagine what would go through someone’s mind after reading that message,” the Pornhub team wrote on their safe-for-work Insights blog, “but based purely on the traffic numbers, it’s NOT to be watching porn.”

Here’s a chart of the site’s traffic before, during and after the false alert, as compared to a normal Saturday:

On a more serious note, Pornhub is one of the largest porn sites on the internet and even ranks ahead of sites like Netflix.  They have a non-porn blog packed with charts, statistics and visualization detailing traffic on their site. It is a fascinating look into the collective psyche of porn watchers.

Here is their 2017 in review
https:/ /www.pornhub.com/insights/2017-year-in-review

A couple of highlights from 2017

28.5 billion searches performed in 2017, or 81 million a day

4.052,543 new videos were uploaded in 2017.  That’s more videos than the number of people who visit the Great Wall of China each year.

2017 uploaded videos needed 3,732 petabytes of storage.  They say that is enough data to fill the memory of every iPhone currently in use in the world today.

Every 5 minutes Pornhub transmits more data than the entire contents of the New York Public library’s 50 million books.

Pornhub allows users to vote on videos ... in  2017 there were 120 million video votes on Pornhub of which nearly 80% were positive. That’s a million votes more than we cast in the last U.S. Presidential election.

Most fascinating stats

Worldwide, 26% of the visitors were female.  25% in the US were female.  The Philippines led with 36% female visitors, followed by Brazil at 35%.  On the other side, 19% in Japan were female, followed by Germany at 21%.

The fourth most searched for porn star WORLDWIDE was .... Kim Kardashian, her name was searched for over 100 million times.  She was #2 in the US and #1 in Canada.

Top three countries, US, UK and then ... India!

Average time spent on the site, 9:59.

The most popular time to watch porn ... 11PM to 1AM (local time)

Yeah...even though that might be some interesting data, there's not a chance in hell I'm clicking on those links.  Your summary will be sufficient.

There is no porn on their blog, it is better described as a "geek site" with a bunch of stats and visualizations.

That said, they are talking about a porn site.

The spike merely appears to be pent-up demand following an artificially extended refractory period.  In other words, reversion to the mean.
Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

Regardless, I modified your links to make them un-clickable.  No need for people to inadvertently get int trouble at work.

They left the site and went outside because they wanted to see what a loaded ballistic missile really looks like.

What is this "porn" that people keep referring to.

It sounds vaguely familiar, but I'm pretty sure I've never seen it.

I saw a similar graph for people eating at Arby's during the missile alert, except the chart was completely the reverse.

Missile alert?  Make that 4 beef and cheddars, please.

Ah...the old, "I just read the articles gambit."  All in all, I think most people would probably prefer to avoid having to explain to their IT department why they were at that domain.  No thank you.

And now, following Rocky's well-advised lead, I'll modify the links in the post where I quoted you to more accurately reflect the consequence of clicking on the original links you provided.
