In running my new ratings at www.valueaddbasketball.com this weekend I noticed Matt Heldt shot up to 280th of almost 4000 players. I went to www.kenpom.com to see what was popping and realized the red "1" under offensive efficiency, meaning Pomeroy ranks Heldt as the most efficient offensive player in the country - projected to generate 172 points every 100 times he has a possession.

Ironically when I first emailed Pomeroy about my theory on creating value add it was to balance the actual value if a guy who only touches the ball once all season when he is open for a dunk - theoretically making that player worth 200 points for every 100 possessions, even though value add would weight his contribution against the % of possessions and games.

So while no 1 in kenpom efficiency is deceiving, being 280th of 4000 players despite the terrible Purdue game shows I may have been dismissive of Heldts steady play.

I mean, 11 of 14 shots made isn't a huge contribution, but it's nice to not make mistakes like never missing shots or turning it over while making kenpoms list for shotblocking etc.

Heldt is a great player for what he is. He may never be a prolific scorer or a shutdown defender. But he's a guy you know won't make many mistakes, won't be the cause of a ton of turnovers etc. Just a solid piece of a pie.

It did seem to help the offense against LSU when we at least pretended Heldt was involved and let him post up a couple times.  Was also aggressive with his finishes.  He has a ceiling, but we'll need him to play there more often than not.

We R Final Four

This may say more of the value of this stat that anything.  :)

100% absolutely aggree.  Im not sure we even need to post him up, but in our screen n roll sets sometimes he is absolutely wide open and we dont even look at him.  Hard to keep tge defense honest when he gets the ball zero times, also hard to understand when he finishes and shoots free throws.  Hopefully game film review will get some balance into our game.

In the back of my mind, I'm waiting for Wojo to give the Green light for him to shoot facing the basket.  His FT stroke seems so much improved, and those Two Ice Cream half court shots bring a hint of promise.

Disraeli (maybe) was talking about Matt when he said, "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."
