One more word on Foxconn and then onto Madness. I think Foxconn is ultimately worth the (essentially taxpayer funded) payout to bring them here with the hopes of building up jobs new communities that have been hit hard in the last decade. Said the same thing about the casino, Amazon, etc. I'm bearish on jobs longer term because of automation, but my skepticism of the workforce's future is a topic for another thread.

That said, their donation was a stupid gift and a slap in the face. They could have created a smart wall in the AMU of they wanted to show commitment to a partnership. NOT a TV that you might find in an entertainment center or a conference room.

Now, to Madness. Ike looked all kinds of rough. He's not ready, but we didn't really expect him to be. Madness is more for the recruits than anything - demonstrate the energy and excitement around the program. I think we accomplished that.

Imagine if they are funding multiple scholarships for minorities, etc, if the generosity slammers would go quiet for a minute or two.

Pretty sure they would say that they were just giving us the State of Wisconsin's money, so no....

For the record, the gift was part of an exchange between the Head of Foxconn and Dr. Lovell, and was  ceremonial in nature as much as anything else.

I doubt that when the head of Foxconn got back on the bus (and yes, Foxconn brought an entire busload of executives to Madness), he said, "I cannot believe that we gave Mike Lovell an expensive piece of state-of-the-art technology, and all he gave us was a couple of basketballs.  What an effing cheapskate."

Have some patience, FFS.

Well that isn't what was given to Foxconn, they most importantly got to be a centerpiece of one of the biggest annual events for MU basketball.  The value of that exposure is worth far far far more than a TV we can buy for $1500.

I'm not wading into this debate...frankly I don't think it belongs on this board period, but your statement/analogy is poor.  I know this, because I'm a world champion on using poor analogies.

Yes, imagine if $3B funds two scholarships.  ::) The two can share a dorm room and the TV.

I can almost hear Wojo telling Ike 'Your job son is to beat on Matty every moment in practice.  Don't even let him breathe.' Way more weapons to get us ready for BEast.

Mike isn't stupid. He is working a lead. Those things usually take some time.  Did you honestly expect him to come out of their first meeting with them and say,  "I got Foxconn to donate a 10-figure amount to the university"?

I'm not disagreeing with you, just saying that analogy was a poor one.

I'm not a big fan of Foxconn, or the deal.  But it is very wise and shrewd of Lovell to embrace them.  It can only be good for the University.

I just really do not want to go into this too much on this board, or on this thread.  Don't think it belongs here...and I know that isn't your fault.

Probably should have kept my mouth shut as my statement served no purpose.  I apologize.

So... suspension?

Dunks?

Did basketballs go through hoops?

Or maybe we ignore the thing that people actually care about and go all in on the TV. Was it 4K (something fancier?!?!) What's the refresh rate?
Maybe it came with its own LTE connection? Someone give us the details!

That would be awesome if they did that!  Why would anyone have a problem with that?

Any scholarship period would do a lot more for campus than a television.

You unsophisticates can read up on Li Shang Wang Lai here.  It is good manners to bring a (often token) gift when visiting one's home or business. A Sharp TV and some basketballs in return show proper etiquette in a developing relationship.  The American culture norm of making a big splash is not the norm elsewhere.

We are trying to raise a bunch of money for a new business school. I wonder if Foxconn is being part of that. Also, this could be a tie-in with the new arena naming rights. will be interesting to see how the relationship grows.

Foxconn is going to be paying a large amount of money to the building we will be playing in a year from now. They got “exposure” (how many people viewed this, and how many of those very small amount of people are Foxconn going to benefit off of?) while MU got a company looking for future employees talking to students on campus for 2 days and get to play in an arena that they’re putting a lot of money and equipment into.

I ventured over to Dodd’s board for the fun of it this morning. I can’t decide which thread is sillier. This one complaining that Foxconn’s gift/donation to MU wasn’t big enough of the one over there questioning the culture of a program that could allow players to have fun in front of fans rather than going all out and putting to practice the defense they have been preaching this offseason.

How will Foxconn be paying into the new arena?  Naming rights?  I doubt that.

You know I am sorry for even bringing this up.

There have been a lot of changes in my life over the past 12 months. Nothing bad. But I find myself not really caring all that much about the coming season or about Marquette basketball in general. It’s probably best that I leave this place for those who do.

It's been mentioned the Feigen and the Bucks owners have been in discussions for naming rights. Whether it is the entire arena or a gate, there's been discussions. I think Feigen was at some announcements for Foxconn coming to Wisconsin. They may not end up paying a cent for the new arena, but there have been discussions.

How many non Superbar threads have been locked because they became too political?  This one is in danger.

And when it does you can reread it months from now you will be thoroughly embarrassed by how stupid this thread became and how far it veered off the rails.

Furthering this ... if Foxconn actually did have a large donation to give to MU, and Lovell thought the appropriate venue to announce such a large gift was Midnight Madness five minutes before Wojo fell off an ATV and the slam dunk competition, the Board of Trustees would be right to ask for Lovells's immediate resignation for disrespecting a generous donor.

Fortunately, Lovell is not as stupid as half the people on this thread.

Exactly right ... it is the equivalent of bringing a bottle of wine to a dinner party.

What is lost is the head of one of the most significant corporations in the world flew in from China and brought a token of appreciation.  Considering MU has plans for innovation alley (if you do not know what this is, please permanently log-off this site) and Foxconn could be a real game-changer in these plans, we should be pleased Foxconn is taking this much interest in MU.

It's not a political point to suggest the Foxconn con is a loser for the citizens of Wisconsin. I'm a registered republican and think every concession surrounding this company is ill-advised and short-sighted.
