MU overcomes shaky shooting night

Marquette made six key free throws down the stretch and Dan Fitzgerald hit a clinching three-point shot with nine seconds left, helping the Golden Eagles escape with a 61-56 victory over Seton Hall Tuesday night at the Bradley Center.

Marquette shot just 32.8 percent for the game, but overcame a seven-point halftimr deficit in the second half thanks to six three-point baskets.

Jerel McNeal led the Golden Eagles with 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists on 6-of-17 shooting. Dominic James added 13 points and five rebounds.

Seton Hall's Eugene Harvey led all scorers with 18 points. Big East leading scorer Brian Laing added 13 points, but fouled out with 1:39 to play.

I dont care if DJ shoots 25% as long as he hits those FTs at the end to cinch it.
You heard it here first. Davante Gardner will be a Beast this year.

Agreed.  DJ's FTs at the end coupled with McNeal's block set up Fitz's dagger at the end to finally allow us to breathe easy.

Watching the game, while there was some poor shooting percentage wise, particularly in the first half, I wouldn't say most of the misses were bad shots taken.  THey just weren't falling and it was particularly frustrating when the 0 footers would just roll out.

Good to escape that one.

Too bad Burke has no skills at all or else he would have saved that ball by McNeal off the three point block. He's not good. Not good at all. Blackledge deserves to get some PT. He definiitely did tonight...especially in the first half when everyone was dragging.

Oh well. We got the W at least.

I'm with you, Niv.  I like the energy and athleticism Blackledge brings to the floor.  On a night like tonight where nothing was going on with our offense, we probably needed Fitz at the 4, but Blackledge rather than Burke from time to time would be nice to see.

Calvin:  Nobody thinks I'm a genius.

The problem with Blackledge is that he is a terrible, terrible defender.  I am not saying Burke is a good defender, but he is better than Blackledge.  Trend rarely sees the ball until it is too late to make a play.  He is sometimes bailed out by his incredible athleticism and long arms, but too often he is caught out of position when he should be helping out.

Burke was great against Wisconsin. He has a pass for the rest of the year. Anything he adds is gravey.

I'd like to see Scott C get some regular minutes. . . we need to see if he can hit some 3s.  Defense is iffy with him at the moment - maybe it's still his knee but he seems slow.  But I still want to see him out there for a few mintues a game

The headers should read "MU has average shooting night," which in their vase means 32%.

Tell us when there is something unusual to note, such as a "decent" shooting night. In such cases Marquette will beat anybody. Sigh.

How do you mean?  Marquette is averaging 48% on Field Goal percentage for the season.  It's one of the things that our team does very well, including against Duke (46%) and Wisconsin (47%).  We're actually one of the best teams in the country at Field Goal Percentage.

Against SHU, we had a season worst field goal percentage.  I think that qualifies as "shaky".
