Comment about the first viz, % of higher seed that wins in the first round of the Men's BB tourney

Between 1985 and 2016 there have been 128 games in the first round ....
Match-up    % higher seed wins
1 v 16                       100%
2 v 15                         94%
3 v 14                         84%
4 v 13                         80%
5 v 12                         64%
6 v 11                         64%
7 v 10                         61%
8 v 9                           50%

Each successive match-up above the higher seed winning percentage goes down.  It suggests the committee is doing a really good job, especially with the 8 v 9 game being 50/50, as it should.

The 5 v 12 seed at 64% is not out of line versus the rest of the match-ups.  This means the perception that the 12 seed beats the 5 seed in unusually large percentages is not the case.

If those 15/16 seeds were eliminated, those teams would still be in. It would be more at-large bids eliminated since the 15/16s are generally small conference tourney winners.

The tournament structure, numbers of teams, requirements for qualifying, etc have changed many times over the years.  No reason the NCAA couldn't eliminate the 8 worst conference champions.

Don't see it happening because more games means more $$$, but it certainly could happen if the NCAA wanted it to....
