Then you would have hated all of Al's teams. If you could not play defense you did not play. It was his trademark as a coach as MU was considered one of the best defensive teams in the country.

A - i think you missed the humor
B - in no way shape or form does anyone not get that our D needs to substantially improve to be a better team.
C - stop pining for a style of game/coaching that is 30+ years old (note: that is not a knock on Al but a recognition that the game has evolved since he coached)

Was browsing the Ken Pomeroy rankings, and looked at our team profile.  Some incredible findings:

Number 1 3-point shooting team in D-1 of 353.

Number 6 in D-1 in eFG%

Number 5 overall in Offensive Efficiency.

This is remarkable performance.  It surprises me to see us so highly ranked, yet we are on the Bubble with 12 losses?  Is it concerning, moving forward, that even with this lethal of offense we are only able to get to being a Bubble Team, 10-8 Big East finisher, and never sniffed a Top 25 ranking?

Given those stats MU ranks 51 in 3 -point attempts this year at 24.4 shots per game.

I think they do a good job of taking threes in the flow of the offense. Honestly, I have no problem whatsoever with the offense. All the issues this team has are at the other end of the floor.

The only substantial difference is the shot clock and 3pt basket. Yes, the 3 pointer has put a slight premium on sharpshooters in todays game and the clock in my opinion puts a greater premium on playing defense then in Al's era. Al's teams shut down some of the greatest shooters the game has seen, Pistol Pete comes to mind not to mention the dagger that Rick Mount killed us with in the '69 regionals; and it was our defense that turned Deans Smith's 4 corners offense against him. Yes the game has changed, but not that much.

MU is #14 in points from treys and #313 in points from inside the arc. Those come primarily from Luke and Matt. Everyone else gets overplayed, swatted or bodied on dribble drives and should be launching. No JFBs, Junior Year Vanders, Amigos, Jaes on this team for the paint touches.

The 3 point shot is a significant difference  - more than you seem to be implying. 

Just look at this Marquette team.  The line-up its been running with toward the end of the year has significant defensive problems.  It is too small, lacks lateral quickness, etc.  But they have been winning because offensively it is just that much better - largely because of the three point shot. 

Defensively teams know this and run teams off the three point line even if it weakens them inside.  Back in the day, there was no reason to run at outside shooters like that.  No matter the distance, the value of the shot is the same.

Very different era.
