Pittsburgh and Syracuse
« on: March 09, 2017, 10:31:06 AM »
I think these two programs are going to become irrelevant in the near future. Two former major powers in the old Big East. Can't say that it breaks my heart.Every time they play I hope they lose.

Cuse has a massive fan base with the positive externality of East Cost bias to boot. They ain't going anywhere. Pitt on the other hand is in a little bit of trouble.

Both programs chased football money even though neither has been relevant in football in over a decade.  They ended up damaging their basketball identity.  Syracuse may be too big (too many resources) to fail, but Pitt may take years to recover.

Let's see what happens when Boeheim leaves. Things already are looking down, and a massive fan base could shrink pretty significantly after 8-10 years or so of 12th place finishes with no postseason.

Syracuse= new Rutgers? Probably not but I am a cuse hater. Temple might be a better comparison if they do fall.

I revel in Cuse's struggles, but let's not forget theyre only 1 year removed from a final four, even if they didn't deserve the bid in the first place.

Hmm....Notre Dame football somewhat sucks, but their basketball team is pretty good.

Also need to consider that Syracuse is a basketball town and the Orange are its main attraction (of course, the chicken and egg argument is present). I think the two are inextricably linked -- think more extreme version of Omaha and Creighton.

Cuse will likely get another undeserved bid this season but they're not going away. If anything, I could see Cuse going the way of Georgetown with Mike Hopkins playing the role of Craig Esherick before they find a long-term coach who has an up and down career but who they then have a hard time replacing due to his strong connection to the HOF coach - Gerry McNamara, for example.
