Does anyone else do that? Thumbs down

It's very big at football schools. Pretty much any big win gets its own t-shirt.

Versions of this one are still floating around College Station:

I do know, Newsie is right on you knowing ball.

Dr. Blackheart

MU will be launching the surplus of those shirts in the t-shirt toss in a week.

Eldon

Well look on the bright side of these t-shirts.

If Stan Johnson or some other assistant wants to give one to a recruit, it's highly likely that the recruit will turn it down.

It may be the next big giveaway. First 50 fans at the Providence game get one.

The things we spend our time complaining about...

dgies9156

If I was Jay Wright, I'd buy 13 of them and spread them around my locker room as motivation. Make my guys wear these shirts for a few days as a reminder.

PistolPete

The spirit shop as a whole is flat out embarrassing* so this comes as no surprise.

*with the rare exception being Jumpman apparel, of which there is little

Why do you say that?

It's quite an improvement from my days as a student, where the spirit wear consisted a couple of racks of generic-looking tees and sweatshirts in the bookstore next to the Varsity Theatre.
Have some patience, FFS.

Would you wear this? It looks like it was produced by an ink-jet printer and ironed on. Give me a break. Scribble font and aggressive chickens aren't for me but that is my personal opinion.

Look I know these are Champagne problems, but this is more of a broader conversation about our brand. MU is a proud institution and IMO the Spirit Shop's offering falls well short of duly representing it.

Anyone can go into a store and pick out one ugly outfit.

So the kids cleared off your lawn to give you time to find a single shirt you don't like as representative of the spirit shop?

In fairness to PistolPete, much of the non Nike, Under Armour, brand name stuff looks pretty basic.

You can find some good stuff but a lot is meh.

Nice! (I am four years your junior based on your handle btw). My apologies if I hurt your feelings, I'd argue that the shirt is actually quite representative of the spirit shop's collection hence why I chose it. If you don't think their merchandise is out of touch, we'll have to agree to disagree.

I'm going to echo some of Pete's sentiments regarding the Spirit Shop. First, the apparel available on campus pales in comparison to what you can get online. Second, the prices at the official Marquette website are often not as good as you'll find on other sites, even though it's pretty clear (when you check multiple sites) they are using the same distributor. Third, it's really, really tough to find a nice looking zip up hoodie. I mean...really difficult. The zip-up selection is downright awful. I can only imagine that other people looking for specific things find similar difficulties.

Is it better than it once was? Sure. But when I can't find a single gold zip-up hoodie in the Shop or on the Internet, that's just silly. They could still use a lot of work improving their stock and options.

Having worked for four different universities and visited dozens more (I always buy a souvenir in my first trip) this is universally true about all spirit shops.

This is also universally true. Except the bit about zip up hoodies, that I have no idea about

eh, I'm just not gonna get my knickers in a twist over the selection at the spirit shop. It's not better or worse than most universities and I can find enough stuff for what I need for games and casual wear.

If we're airing grievances, I will concede that in 2017 it's maddening that the website has completely different inventory than what is in the actual store.

You are just a cooler cucumber than I. It's more about branding and exposure, e.g. spotting an MU cap at the airport and initiating a conversation (which I do when provided the opportunity). I'd contribute far more of my expendable income to MU merchandise if the offering were more attractive.

I seem to find the 'Motion W' everywhere I look in Chicago. Sure, their student body/alumni base is considerably larger, but I'd also argue that UW's branding is far superior to MU's. Maybe that's due to resource allocation?

To your second point - and I could be wrong - but I believe the Spirit Shop and the web store are actually separate entities.

The Spirit Shop itself has its own website separate from the Fanatics online store that most colleges run through.  The Spirit Shop website has what is actually in the store.  The other does not.

Yeah, Imma back up Pete as well. I think the important point is that we're not looking for some extravagant plethora of offerings that are even on par with a huge Big 10 school or some other national-appeal programs.  The marginal utility is there for those schools to invest way more than I would expect from MU on that front. But the MU offerings and branding seems schizophrenic sometimes.

For all of MU's branding reliance on tradition and history, there seems to be a distinct lack of apparel that is in line with that focus. One of my favorite purchases from the MU spirit shop was a navy Golden Avalanche football t-shirt I bought there about 5 years ago, and I get shout outs for it whenever I wear it.  I think whoever designs the apparel offerings would be better off going through the archives and recreating the exact same designs they were stocking anywhere from 50-20 years ago (even minus the warrior references) than the kind of "not retro but not modern, either" merch we have now.

I think it's a question of target audiences. I'm assuming they get a lot more current students buying stuff than alumni...so they are going to tailor to their interests. I would definitely buy stuff that was sans golden chicken and retro without being Warriors, but I'm not sure I'm the target audience either.
