Can somebody explain what our guards can do on the block against big men?  We're holding position.  What are we doing illegally?  I would sincerely like to know.

wadesworld

Not allowed to box out the champs on your home court.

nyg

Fischer with 6 free throw misses.

Vander Blue Man Group

Get better refs?  Those calls were awful.

I had the same question. Even when they slowed it down to explain it, I didn't understand what they were trying to say.

It looked like a textbook box out.  they didn't even push hard enough to cause the nova player to move...just holding position.  Don't see how those were fouls.

BallBoy

The issue is that there is a long rebound and Villanova is going straight up. the Mu players keep backing up through the box out and are effectively cutting the legs out from underneath the Nova player. If the MU player boxed out and as the ball tried to go up it would likely be over the back.

Thank you. You made way more sense than the announcers. Smart play by Nova to go straight up then.

Agreed.  Thanks for the explanation.

This is a tough one. I got it called on me a few times and a ref needed to explain it. It is harder for smaller guards because you are putting more pressure to keep the big out and they are providing you with a backstop to help you stay up. As they jump that backstop goes away, like pulling the rug out from underneath you, and you naturally keep moving backward and you clip their legs. It really is hard to understand when you end up on the floor and hard for fans to understand because of how the movement looks it appears as if the defender is pulling you down but he is not.

I understand when it's a foul when you "undercut" someone. But go back and look at Howard's boxout foul. He didn't undercut at all

BallBoy

On his last foul, he did. They replayed it several times, he backed into the player as said player was going for the ball. Both commentators said "That is a foul. that is a foul." Followed by a very bad explanation.

Johnson's foul was slightly different in that the Nova player was shooting towards the basket along the baseline. Johnson tried to move over to box him out. In the process, the Nova player made a move for the ball and Johnson went into him.
