Additional thought ...

1 - 9 sounds terrible but one should have a poor record against the #1 team.  They are #1 for a reason (the best team) and unless you're maybe #2 or #3 (which MU actually was in 1974 and 1976) you really should have no chance.

So this record is not that surprising.

Or, to turn it around, if you have a winning record against #1 teams (not counting 1 - 0) then why aren't you #1!!

Looks like they are about due. Don't play #1 very often and very much looking forward to getting home in time to watch it.

Al never played #1 in the regular season, his three #1 contests came in the tourney.

Unless you regularly played UCLA in the 70s, or the ACC in the last 15 years (Duke and UNC) and maybe the SEC (Kentucky) the rest of the teams have probably played #1 as much as we have.

MU is not getting #1 out of conference unless Wisconsin is #1 (they were actually #2 when we played them a few years ago, but never #1).  Note the only out of conference #1 was when MU played Duke in 2010 in a tourney in KC (I was at that game).  Before that was 1986 when UNC scheduled a "nearby game" for Joe Wolf (note, in 1986 MU was independent, not in a conference).  That is about it for the last 50 years for out of conference (and non-tourney).

In recent years, P5 teams plus the BE have probably played #1 as much as we have unless it has Duke, UNC or Kentucky in their conference.

I am pretty well versed on our history of playing #1's, hence my excitement. I have been to four of such contests and feel they are a treat to play in.

Only 1 real blowout in those 10 games. The worst one is by 16 and that was all the way back in 53.

This will be the first time we've played a #1 in back to back seasons. First time we've played the same #1 twice as well. Thanks for sharing Heisy.

I was thinking this as well. I know there are no moral victories, but Warriors acquitted themselves pretty well in most of those.

I look forward to us being 2-9 about 3 days and 21 hours from now!

Gotta remember that MU was an independent back then. Cupcakes weren't just for early season games. I would probably make a comparison to Gonzaga now. Great record every year, but not the most challenging schedule.

The NCAA record for victories against a no. 1 team is 13 held by UNC. 9 of them were beating Duke.

UNC also lost to the number 1 team 18 times.  Many of them were also against Duke.

What I found interesting in the list was that in 1977 North Carolina was not ranked number 1, when we beat them in the championship game. Does anyone know who was ranked number 1 going into the tournament?

Michigan or San Francisco depending when the tournament started that year

Based on his last bracket, we are. But that was before the loss to SHU. He tweeted his S-curve the other day and I believe we were the 2nd team out.

I thought UCONN was number one in the game where James broke his foot.  But that was over a decade and 2 kids ago, so my memory is spotty.

More fund stuff here ...

Villanova holds a 19-9 advantage over Marquette in an all-time series that dates back to 1960, but over half of the matchups (20) have come since the Golden Eagles joined the BIG EAST Conference in 2005-06.

Along with regular season and tournament matchups in league play, the two teams also squared off in the 1963 National Invitation Tournament and the 1980 NCAA Championship. Marquette downed the Wildcats 66-58 in the NIT, but fell 77-59 in the opening round of the NCAA's in Providence, R.I.

Marquette has dropped each of the last eight meetings with Villanova, including an 89-79 decision on Feb. 27, 2016 at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

----

The Golden Eagles are 116-187 all-time versus programs in the top-25 at the time of the matchup, including a 43-115 mark against top-10 squads.

Marquette has played five games when ranked No. 1 in the country itself and owns a 4-1 record. No. 9 Notre Dame knocked MU from the top spot on Feb. 26, 1978 with a 65-59 decision in its last visit to the top of the rankings.

Not quite a decade ago yet. That was the 08-09 season.

That means we are 73-72 against teams ranked 11-25. Not a bad mark actually.
