I think about this kind of stuff all the time. Here's how I'd see it, week-by-week, if we went undefeated (we won't, we'll probably lose this week, but just on the "what if" assumption):

Nov 14: 1-0, Getting votes
Nov 21: 4-0, #24 (Sneak in at the end thanks to three high-major wins on national television)
Nov 28: 6-0, #23 (Meaningless wins, but someone will probably lose)
Dec 5: 8-0, #19 (Road win over Georgia gives us a better bump
Dec 12: 10-0, #13 (Win over top-10 Badger team bumps us up significantly)
Dec 19: 10-0 #14 (No games that week, Badger bump fades)
Dec 26: 12-0, #12 (Someone ahead of us loses)
Jan 2: 14-0, #9 (Wins over Georgetown, SHU propel us up as conference play starts to pick those ahead of us off)
Jan 9: 15-0, #5 (We just beat a likely undefeated Villanova on the road)
Jan 16: 17-0, #4 (Assuming someone ahead of us loses)
Jan 23: 18-0, #3 (Win over Butler, someone ahead of us loses)
Jan 30: 20-0, #1 (Completed sweep of Villanova, beat Providence)

Clearly this is complete pie in the sky, and complete and utter BS based on one impressive win over what will probably be at best a bubble Vanderbilt team, but if we did stay undefeated to 20-0, this is probably about the trajectory. If we went 33-0 coming into the tournament, we would be the #1 seed in the entire thing unless Duke, Kansas, or Kentucky was also undefeated. With our league strength and enough SOS to be competitive, no way we wouldn't be a 1-seed. Just no way. Attrition would ensure it.

And given that Kansas already cannot go undefeated...

Not to mention their next game is a neutral site game with Duke tomorrow.  So maybe 2 of the teams we'll be competing for an undefeated season with  ;) could lose their first game within the first week of the season, we're in some pretty good shape for that #1 overall seed!

I know most of this is in jest and hypotheticals, but I see we are on the high end of the spectrum today.

After we lose our first game there will be the "Are We Going To Miss The NIT" thread.

I believe it will be more along the lines of Fire Wojo

How long do we have to go undefeated to be ranked No. 1?

I love it!    ;D

I think we may get a handful of votes Monday. We throttled a high major in one of the first games of the season. Lots of eyes on that game. It's easier to pick up votes this time of year when voters don't really know how good anyone is. Let's see the polls tomorrow.

We're 41! We're 41!

Seriously guys.  Let's take one step forward every week.  It's been far too long since relevance.

I'm a VERY optimistic person at heart, but let's all just remember to take this one step at a time. That way when MU only wins by 17 tonight we don't all lose our crap and go nuts.

Have we ever received top 25 votes in Wojo's tenure?

We received votes last year but were not top 25.

Also, clearly ESPN didn't take our Dayton secret scrimmage into account...

Good thing the NCAA Tournament selection committee does.

ESPN doesn't make these rankings, its an aggregate of about 50 sports writers nationwide.
I would take the Rick SLU program right now.

I rather be underrated then be ranked right away at the beginning of the season.

Just for historical reference, prior to today, Marquette hadn't received a vote in the AP Poll since Week 6 (Dec. 14) of 2015-16 (Received 1 vote after beating Wisconsin in Madison on Dec. 12).

Marquette hasn't been ranked since Week 4 (Nov. 25) of 2013-14. MU started the season at #17, as the preseason pick to win the Big East. After getting clocked by Ohio State on November 16, MU dropped to #25. The voters gave MU a stay of execution the following week, even after MU squeaked by New Hampshire at home. The next week, Marquette lost to Arizona State, and lost to San Diego State in the Wooden Classic Final. The voters lost their patience and MU was out of the Top 25 and haven't been back since.

So, 7 votes in the coaches poll. Odds that 2 of those came from the Drew family?

Or that one of the Drew boys ranked us at #19?

Edit: was it the coach's poll or the AP poll that has us at 7 votes?

Unless I am reading it wrong, we got zero votes in the coaches poll.

I am surprised we got 7 votes in the AP. We were generally rank in the 55-65 area preseason and win a game over a bottom feeder from the worst power conference in the country and we moved up maybe 15-20 places.

Vandy isn't a bottom feeder. Middle of the pack in the SEC. Of course the bottom of that conference is really bad.

I hope you're right, TAMU. I have serious questions about them after last week tho'. No PG and a team full of weak (physically) players.
