What ever happened to this tournament? I know we still have the banner up in the BC. I wonder if it were revived would it have decent viewership?

I think it's called the Big East Conference now.

We may not have beaten Belmont, but BuzzCup's response may have won the internet "Belmont"  by a widening 25 lengths.

And Secretariat is moving like a tremendous machine!
Zenyatta has a lot....a lot... of ground to make up. She gets there from here she'd be a super horse......what's this.....Zenyatta hooked to the grandstand side....Zenyatta flying on the outside....this....is...un-belieeeeeevable!...looked impossible at the top of the stretch...

That tournament was basically a CBI of it's day.  We entered with a below.500 record.  If that team is coached by anyone other than Tex Winters, we would not have put up a banner (which I believe we have since taken down).

One of the truly cool things about scoop is that once I saw the original post I thought, "Someone on here is going to know what the poster is talking about."  And someone did, thanks, Lens.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

After looking at the record of that year I agree with you but lets say it was revived this year we'd have a tournament to play in against like minded schools most of which are basketball centric.

Boston College, Canisius, Creighton, Dayton, DePaul, Detroit Mercy, Duquesne, Fairfield, Fordham, Georgetown, Gonzaga, Holy Cross, Iona, La Salle, Loyola Chicago, Loyola Maryland, Loyola Marymount, Notre Dame, Manhattan, Marquette, Mount St. Mary's, Niagara, Portland, Providence, Sacred Heart, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Seattle, Seton Hall, Siena, St Bonaventure, St Francis (NY), St Francis (PA), St John's, St Joseph's, St Louis, St Mary's, St Peter's, Xavier, Villanova

10 are taken by the NCAA and 3 by the NIT. My hope would be this tournament might be an alternative to the NIT for catholic schools interested in showing a bit of solidarity.

EDIT:

Scratch this whole concept of all the remaining teams not in the NCAA or NIT the only ones .500 or above are

Marquette 20 wins
Fairfield 18 wins
Siena 21 wins
Detroit 16 wins
Duqesne 16 wins

This tournament would suck, it also didn't dawn on me that most of the catholic schools aren't in remotely major conferences.

I think it would make more sense as an 8 team preseason tournament, rotating the field so every decent D1 Catholic school gets to participate once every 4 or 5 years. You could balance the field to have 4 strong/major conference teams each year, with 4 mid-major teams, building the bracket so the stronger teams meet in the semis and finals, which is how most preseason tournaments work nowadays. I could get behind this concept.

Maybe the Knights of Columbus and Catholic Financial Life could sponsor it. Bingo at halftime and fish fry at the concessions.

EDIT: Only issue would be is if teams can't be from the same conference. could present an issue. Might require narrowing it down to a 4 team field, and instead of calling it a tournament just calling it a "Catholic Classic" or something like that. Could have just the major conference teams.

Notre Dame
Villanova
Gonzaga
Dayton

etc.

There's enough low majors that you could include a few as buy games like Belmont this past year. I like the way you think, plus it'd help the brands of smaller basketball schools so they can get on their feet again (San Francisco, Loyola Chicago, Loyola Maramount)

Big tuna

MU had a wonderful reunion for this team, the banner was raised in the Bradley Center, the players, coaches and its championship were honored.
Yet years later MU unceremoniously removed the banner, and almost certainly tossed the banner in the garbage.   Legacy trashed.  Not cool.

Hubert Davis

The athletic department did indeed remove the 1952 banner from the rafters in a disgraceful move. Mike Broeker confirmed it via twitter when a fan reached out inquiring about its whereabouts. Claimed they had to remove it due to limited rafter space...a load of BS and slap in the face to that team, its families and the fan base.

Sure Sultan ignore the fact that Notre Dame, Gonzaga, Dayton, St Josephs, SMC and more would all be great non conference foes to play. Then ignore that most of the teams listed would be an improvement over the crap schedule we have now.  Excuse me for thinking out of the box.
