While no outcomes are close to certain, and a team or two will likely pull through, there is a very real possibility that the big ten gets shut out of the sweet 16.

Maryland should win, but for a good team, they play like crap. Indiana winning wouldn't surprise me, though very hard not to like UK right now.

Always love this kind of data. Cleaned it up to a table if you're going to keep it updated.

Think you're being generous here. The Big 12 came into the NCAA tournament as the strongest conference in the country. Their teams sure haven't played that way. Texas even had the advantage of playing in its backyard in Oklahoma City and still lost to an 11 seed.

I'd add the Big 10 to the list of underperformers. Many predicted Michigan St. as a #1 seed and the eventual national champion. Their first-round loss is one of the biggest upsets in the history of the tourney.

They are no longer players for Marquette, so I can't really say I feel anything one way or the other for them...except for helping my bracket  ;D But beating a 13 seed and a 12 seed to get to the sweet 16 is about as easy of a path as you can get. If they get past UVA, I'll be impressed.

Below is a slightly different way of looking at it.  Essentially performance by seed.  It operates on the assumption that the higher seed is predicted to win and if you are a lower seed and lose it is not reflected as a loss.  It corrects for bias towards conferences that have a lot of games where they are favored to win.

High Seed (g) is the number of games where a conference team had the higher seed.  Upsets are counted as a win still so it is possible to have 9 wins in 8 games (ACC).

It shows that the ACC was a beast this year.  The BEAST (only favored in 3 games but 4 wins) was under-rated.  The Pac-12, way over-rated as their seeds do not reflect their performance.

Gonzaga, way under-seeded (not a surprise).

You need to beat who's in front of you, and the ACC has done that. However, they have won 12 games in the tournament so far. Syracuse beat Dayton, a 7 seed, for the conferences best win. UVA and UNC beat Butler and Providence, two 9 seeds. The other 9 ACC wins have come against double digit seeds. ND, Duke, Miami, and Syracuse all played seeds 11 or higher in their 2nd round games.

Honestly didn't notice. Some conferences get all the breaks.

They got a lot of breaks this year. No denying that. But they also managed to fall victim to upsets that other conferences have dealt with, so they do deserve a lot of credit.

But they also earned their seeds and made the most of them.  Big Ten lost a 2 seed in round 1.  Big East a 2 seed in round 2.   ACC, not doing that....yet.

One thing: for all of the supposed parity there is not a single mid or low major in the Sweet Sixteen. Gonzaga is only S16 left from a one bid conference.

Not a good year for the little guy past the first round.

People are so biased since our team comes the big east. Is nova capable of making the big east look good if they can go deep? Yes but as we stand at this moment the conference has dissapointed..
Seton hall: lost to Lower seed/underachieved

Providence/butler: meh did what was expected. Achieved minimum

Xavier: painful choke in the second round: yeah being a 2 seed huge dissapointment: under achieved
Nova: well so far there where they should be we will see.

OverAll it hasn't been a disaster but I'd say the big east so far has been a slight let down.. But hey if nova makes the final four it all changes

I understand that. Just amazed that so many of them got double digit seeds in the round of 32

Johnny ,I have been a Big East supporter all year. However, the reality of this NCAA performance has been a bit deflating as You point out.

Seton Hall laid an egg and so did Xavier.

Seton Hall was understandable as they reverted to their selfish ball hogging ways of last year when they got on the big stage.

Xavier, had no excuse for choking down the stretch against the Badgers. None.

Butler actually showed up and performed well. They got very close against UVA. But close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades.

All year long Dunn has been in foul trouble for Providence and that really hurt them against a UNC type team where he needs to be in the game all the time.

Hopefully , Villanova has their act together against Miami. I think blowing out Iowa gives them a nice tail wind and broke through a mental barrier they had. Lets hope they can get to the Elite Eight. If they can do that any thing is possible.
