'85 Bears 30 For 30
« on: February 04, 2016, 10:07:27 PM »
I was skeptical going into this 30 For 30, the '85 Bears obviously been pounded into submission for 30 years, but that was as good a sports documentary I can recall. The last ten minutes, and the culmination of the story telling...wow. If you're a sports fan, watch it, especially the last ten minutes. Doesn't matter if you're a Bears fan, it's an emotional watch.

It was well done.

I lived in Chicago in 85 and hated the Bears.  Arrogant a$$holes. See Super Bowl shuffle.  Just lame. Act like you've been there before.  See ditka bragging about needing to practice his gin game, and subsequent DUI.  McMahon was just a d1ck.

I had to laugh tonight.  Ditka admitted he was a walking, talking a$$hole back then.  I respect that.

A fun watch. The Buddy Ryan aspects were well done (particularly the letters) as was the post-playing days wrap-up. Not much new info otherwise about the actual season, but it's always enjoyable to see highlights of the greatest NFL team of all time.

What's so very amazing about that season is that early on it was VERY easy to get tickets.  I was in my second year of grad school just down the IC in Hyde Park.  My buddy and I decided to get tickets for the Monday night Packers/Bears game sometime during the summer.  Sat in the endzone where Fridge bulled over George Cumby.  No scalping, no stubhub.  Just called up the Bears ticket office and bought 'em I'm guessing 8-12 weeks prior to the game.  Feel privileged to have been there.

Of course I went to that game as a lifelong Packers fan.  But by that time we had been bad for more than 15 years.  For the rest of that season I decided to ride on the bandwagon.  Sure was fun.

For those who weren't in Chicago, Superbowl Sunday had to be 20 below zero.  One of the coldest days in Chicago history.  Chick and I watched the game together in International House among a group of a couple hundred students where probably 50% were from other countries.  It was fun as American kids explained the game to them in real time.  Everyone got caught up in Bear fever.  Good times.

I remember going to training camp in Platteville as a kid in 1985 (I was 4.5). Based on our pictures and my parents' stories, there were maybe 100 people there and the players walked right through the crowd from the practice fields to the locker rooms. My brother and I have an awesome picture of us with Walter Payton. My mom, naturally, got a picture with Gary Fencik. We went back the next year and the place was a madhouse where the players' walked through a roped-off area to and from practice.

I dunno about that. Bears are still the number one team in chicago. The only game I was out at a bar for this year was the Raiders game and there wasn't a open seat in the house, and they've been awful the past couple seasons.

Really?  Stories from 30 years ago illustrate a difference in the fan bases of today?
