Georgetown vs UConn

Watching this game makes me wish for UConn to be in the Big East. While we don't have the incredible history with them that Georgetown does but I looked forward to our games with them.

I was at the game.  Great atmosphere.  Found out MU was canceled while driving home in the blizzard, which really wasn't that bad in CT.  The main takeaways for me was that DSR missed a ton of open shots down the stretch (that son of a gun made every big shot against us), UConn got into the lane against GU man-to-man pretty easily, and we sure could have used Shonn Miller.

They will help the league, if they can win a couple of NCAA tournament games. The league really needs a couple of deep runs to get full respectability. I do not care who, but getting two teams in the elite 8 would be great for this league. A final four team would be really nice.

Love UConn.  It would be awesome to have their women's program on board.  They just have to decide to leave that monkey trap of Division I football.  If costs continue to rise, there could be some shakeout eventually.

I wish someone would teach them two life lessons.  Lesson 1: You will never be an SEC-caliber team, making SEC-caliber dollars.  And Lesson 2 (related to 1): Sunk costs are sunk--you will never recoup the money that you spent on that 33k-seat stadium.

UConn is not coming back to the Big East - not now, not ever.  They remain committed to football not because they feel they can become a national power, but because it is their ticket out of a mid-major conference and into a power conference that gives more credibility, more money and more prestige.  Quite frankly, they have spent too much time, money and resources on football thus far to simply throw in the towel and give up now.  While they were, without question, the biggest loser in realignment this last go-around, they are arguably the best available athletic program remaining that can be poached by one of the B1G or ACC (longterm, not immediate future).  Frankly put, there is no guarantee that they get a lifeboat out of the American, but the only way out is through football - so they need to focus on football in order to be saved.

While it is a very depressing sight to see UConn play at Houston, Tulane, East Carolina, UCF and USF in front of a couple of hundred fans, it is the necessary sacrifice the school is making. 

I do miss playing them, however (and Louisville, and Notre Dame, and Syracuse, and Pittsburgh, and West Virginia).

I love how the post after a guy brings up sunk costs, the guy after him uses the sunk cost fallacy to justify UConns commitment to football.

TAMU, I didn't say that I agreed with their position - but it is the clear position that UConn is taking. 

Between Rentschler Field, their football complex and their training facility, the school has spent over $100 million in the past 15 years on football facilities alone.  If they took the stance today, "Well, it was a terrible investment and we are torpedoing the football program" - how many people in position of power at the school would be forced to resign/get fired?  What do you do with those state of the art facilities on campus?  Pay more money to bulldoze them/hire replacements?  Those facilities are way too small for big-time college football-use (only 42,000), and not nearly big enough for NFL use.  It's a perfectly imperfect scenario.

Look at the chaos and firings at UAB when they announced they were shutting football down (only to reverse course and shut down the program for a year).  For big, public state schools, bad football is still better than no football at all.  College football is a necessary evil to keep boosters, alumni and supporters happy.  It is what it is.

Thankfully, the Big East schools will never, ever, be victims of the vicious collegiate football landscape again.  We control our own destiny - free from the decision-making policies and guidelines that public schools want for their football programs.  In 10, 20, 50 years, historians will look back and wonder why there wasn't a split (between football/non-football) sooner than 2013.  Heck, they may even ask why UConn wasn't one of those schools.  Today, however, they've made their bed - now, they get to sleep in it.
