We should have ran the score up on them.

You know, I kind of like this. Can we permanently change the name to the Marquette Warriorserrrr..Golden Eagles?

Much obliged!

I was a frosh that year, and it was pretty much the greatest thing ever. Running from 16th all the way to the lake in a hoard of blue and gold.. phenomenal!!

Well the comments from Glockner are not surprising, considering MU isn't in his power 16 picks. As a soon to be Alum, it's getting a bit annoying that people refuse to accept "Golden Eagles" as our mascot. Remarks like Glockner's don't help.

I agree... but man, I don't want to get started down this path.

I hope someday that Warriors and Eagles and sit together in harmony.

Well...we are warriors. We won a nat'l championship as warriors, and the way the name changed leaves a sour taste in my mouth.  Just not a fan, I'll accept it for what it is but will always be a warrior at heart.

Amen

For those of us that lived through the attempted renaming it will always cause unease.  We went from Warriors to a name another Catholic Univerity already was using.  It felt like an insane decision at every level.  Rational or not the Warrior contingent will have to die off before acceptance at least I will.

I hear ya. I've got no problem with that, and I have a great deal of respect for students, players, coaches, etc. that came before me.

I just hope that the older alumni can respect the students and younger alumni who had the eagle as their mascot.

I'm not thrilled about the eagle, but I don't want to be belittled because I'm not a "Warrior".

I have a lot of MARQUETTE pride, not matter what the logo is.

Yes, but were you in Minneapolis? 3rd best sports moment of my life, esp since i scalped awesome seats for 40 bucks a person the night before the game. Best Marquette game i think i will ever see.

As for the name, why would some of the warrior traditionalists want someone as lousy at TC representing them? hint hint. so, you will always have the warriors and not have the stigma of the poor coach we have today. that said, lets go golden eagles

Very well said 2002.  That's what pisses me off about the whole issue.  It's not the later generations' fault that they are Eagles.

Nobody is blaming the students for the pathetic nickname. And the fact of the matter is that 62 percent of students identified more with Warriors than Golden Eagles in 2005. These are kids who were less than 10 years old when it was changed. This is in addition to more than 90 percent of alums. If you want to ask people to accept something, accept this: It's a terrible nickname and will always be a terrible nickname. I would have preferred Gold to be honest. It came completely out of nowhere and almost everybody hates it or is embarrassed by it.

The fact that it keeps coming up in the media is indicative of how lame a decision it was.

You are right. Nobody can argue that Warriors is the more popular name.

But, you know what? MU was the Eagles when I went there... and the more I hear people whine about the nickname, the more it just gets old.

It seems the nickname is all a lot of older alumni want to talk about. Nobody wants to talk about how great campus looks, or how great the school is doing, or how admissions are up. They just want to wear a t-shirt with the old logo on it and say something about how MU isn't like it used to be and the PCers have ruined it.

Now, I think that is an clear indication of how big of a mistake the nickname thing was (I understand that, and agree the nickname was a mistake)... but I also think it is an indication of how some people have lost touch with the school and only have one thing to focus on... the nickname.

Go to campus, see the buildings, talk to the students, talk to the faculty, see a game, see the Al, see the school spirit. Regardless of the nickname, MU is doing some GREAT things and I hope the pro-Warrior crowd (who I respect) realizes that.

While the nickname is disappointing, (IMHO) it's hardly be the thing that everybody should focus on.

In my opinion, ANYTHING would be better than Golden Eagles. It's goes beyond lame. It's something that non-Marquette people reference to laugh laugh about. It's an absolute embarrassment, that's the only way to put it.

And the more they try to sell it, the worse it gets.

lots of young kids I've met like people from Iowa and Nebraska don't know about the Warriors which is too bad. but they all like the golden eagles.  they just are confused by the whole "gold" thin

That is PRECISELY why the subject should be addressed on this website. Students unfamiliar with our real name -- how it was stripped away from us, the ridiculous excuses we've been given (despite BOTs members begging it to be changed), the continued "Warriors chants -- need to know what it's all about!

Once again, it wasn't 90% of alums that said they identified with Warriors.  The total amount of responses was barely over a third of the alums.  It was 90% of that group that said they identified with Warriors, or about 30% of alums.

And even then, in the second portion of the survey, when faced with the choice of taking a stand and showing how much they wanted Warriors by writing in the vote even though they knew it wouldn't count, or choosing one of the nicknames that would count, only 10% of respondents, around 3300 people actually cared enough to write Warriors in.
