curious to see what everyone thinks about this one. a 20 point loss to start conference play is about as bad as gets. We can all talk about improvement, but when put to a real test we failed and failed bad.

tower912

Not good.   I wish I was more surprised.    The Big East is tough and our guys played soft.

Losing by one or twenty is the same. It's still one loss in the standings. Doesn't change my thought that we can win Saturday.

Yes, it was bad, and we got too fat on cupcakes, but we'll lose some we shouldn't and win some we shouldn't. No reason we can't get them back in Newark.

Brew, you and I seem to be on the same page 99% of the time. You normally even help me back away from the ledge. I don't think there is anything you can say or do to keep me from jumping this season. Haha!

I would like to believe that, but it remains to be seen

Bingo.  Coming to conclusions on a team based on 20 minutes of basketball when they start a junior, sophomore, and 3 freshman is beyond silly.  But it's what happens here.  And last time it happened we ran off 9 straight wins.

I'm not so torn up by the loss, and believe that the team will still be competitive overall (even if it only means an NIT bid). Tonight makes me wish, though, that our first BEast game had been on the road, where a loss is more expected and accepted. We need to hold our own at home, and we didn't do that. The guys learned what the BEast means.

Now, we have a loss at home and need to go on the road to a G'town team that has underperformed. I'm watching the G'town-DePaul game, and while I hope that DePaul wins, I worry what that might mean for G'town's attitude Saturday.

seton hall is very young as well. youth is no longer an excuse in today's college basketball

GoldenZebra

Its hard to believe that itll change much, because quite frankly the teams MU has beaten arent super good. Conference play is going to be brutal. At least we got used to getting Ws, there are probably going to be a lot of more Ls. I hope I am wrong, but geez, its not looking good. A blowout loss at home, to start conference play is not what you need to build a platform for conference success. This was a big game, and important game for the team and it was blown. Even if somehow they win Saturday, that would likely just place MU back in neutral, not going forward, imho.

mu_hilltopper

When you are a middle-of-the-BE team, you start your predictions with an 8-8 record.  While Henry and Fishy might win two extra games for us, our freshmen experience loses 2.  And our lack of luck loses another.

2-7 versus the top half of the BE .. 5-4 versus the bottom half.

Just got one of those top-half loses out of the way tonight.

Right.  Which is exactly why you'll see Seton Hall blow a team out on the road and lose to that same team at home just like like some team they did this to last year.

Young teams go through ups and downs.  Seton Hall is young (not nearly as young as Marquette).  They beat Wichita State, Georgia, Marquette, and Ole Miss but lost to Long Beach State and George Washington.

We got smoked at home by Iowa and won our next 2 games on neutral sites against LSU and ASU, and then beat Wisconsin in the Kohl Hole.

Youth absolutely causes inconsistencies.  The good part about it?  It's both bad and good inconsistencies.

Making the tournament this season was always going to be about sweeping St. John's, DePaul, and Creighton. Splitting with Georgetown/SH, and stealing a couple against the top 4.

Does this make it harder? Of course. But we can still accomplish that. Just have to have some better performances on the road. A team that shoots 64% from the line and 34% from three shot 85% and 50% respectively. We shot terribly. Good chance that evens out in Newark.

manny31

You cannot get smacked down on your own floor by Seton Hall and expect to make the tournament. I hope I am wrong but I don't think I am.

jsheim

Are we that bad a shooting team...I hope not. Ugly.

Is henry that domestic...I hope not. Diamond had 39 today if I heard right.

Do we wilt like that as a rule...I hope not...I don't mind a loss so much that we fight at the end...but we were overwelmed.

SH may be the team we wanted to be...maybe we need to be sophmores like them.

GooooMarquette

I fully expected we'd win some we're expected to lose, and lose some we're expected to win.  This is simply one of the latter.  Ugly, but a loss is still just a loss. A win @ Georgetown would ease the pain, but it wouldn't be the end of the world if we lose.

Now if we lose to SJU next Saturday....

Daniel

What improvements as a team have we seen?  Offense cranking?  No.  Tough defense?  No. Turnovers reduced?  Not much.  Dominating inside with our bigs?  Not agents non-cupcakes.

So.... We can continue to say we need to improve, but when will it happen?  That's the question.

This. Everyone seems so optimistic about the season, but why? The team hasn't shown much promise. Have they beat a tourny team yet?

MilWarrior

ASU is looking like a tourney team. So they've beaten 1 of the 2 tourney teams they've faced so far. Not a ton of opportunities yet - so maybe wait until rushing to judgement?
The team improved a ton after the Iowa game. Why is this so hard to understand? They regressed big time tonight - but it's one goddamn game.
People are optimistic because we have a ton of talented young players. Yes, they make mistakes - but almost every night they are taking on players/teams with more experience than them. Talent can't beat experience every night - especially nights like tonight when shots just weren't falling.
You haven't seen tough defense this season? Did you forget to watch the UW game? Our bigs have been pretty goddamn dominant - not just against cupcakes:
UW: Henry 15 pts 11 reb 4 ast
       Luke 12 pts 8 reb
ASU: Henry 18 pts 11 reb
         Luke 18 pts 8 reb
LSU: Henry 16 pts 11 reb
        Luke 19 pts 8 reb

Sorry for the rant - but a 20 minute stretch is not something to call off the season for. Especially with a team that has already proven once this year that they can bounce back.

humanlung

Has anyone on this team hit the floor going for a loose ball yet this year?  I cannot remember it if they have.

And this is emblematic of the problem we have (so far) this year, IMO.

Interesting. So a tournament team has never had a bad loss at home during their season?

MU - thanks for the advice.
No one's panicking - it's just a game.  These are just legitimate questions.  Period.
