Strictly and purely for arguments sake, how would a Brian Butch: A. Fit in on this team B. Help/Hurt this team.  Was having a standard discussion tonight about Marquette's constant lack of a big man/center who can contribute (not in the way a Faisal or Lovette contributed, but on the same level as one of the big 3 guards contributes)

augoman

sooo, you mean more like a Robert Jackson?  Obviously, it'd be huge!  Now, Butch wouldn't fill that role on a regular basis, but, on certain nights, he does go off.

I won't speculate on what a slimmed down Butch would do, becuase he hasn't be really slim in 5 years. So, the current 245 lb. model of Brian Butch:
A. Would not fit in because he's too slow.  As far as his perimeter game goes, Fitz already fits the bill as a big who can shoot.
B.  I initially thought that he could help on the defensive glass but I looked up his stats and Barro has a higher defensive rebounding % and Lazar is within 2%.  Burke, Barro and Lazar also have better offensive ratings per ken pom.  So my answer is we can do without him.

chapman

He would help "raise the roof" everytime something good happened...

Harrison

Defensively, which includes rebounding, he would do nothing for us but provide depth.  Burke is a better defender.  He is better than Ooze only in the sense that Ooze has never seen a shot fake that he would not bite on and falls down so much his nickname should be Jenga!
Offensively he would help in that he is more of an offensive weapon in that he can create his own shot.  We would be better with him...not that he is great but our biggest weakness is a baseline threat and that is what he happens to be.  Albeit a 5th year senior who is a Mcdonald's All-American bust...but still better than what we currenty have.

Harrison

not saying that...just saying Ooze drives me nuts as a coach when he falls down after so many rebounds due to terrible positioning and footwork.  And his habit of jumping on every shot fake which allows for layins or offensive putbacks at a very high rate.

CTWarrior

Of course we wouldn't have redshirted Butch and he'd be gone by now anyway.  One of our current players would probably not be on the roster but we would have then had room for Saunders, if you're in the camp that believes we cut him loose because of a missing scholarship rather than for his legal transgressions.  Ooze would be even less developed (in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he was the scholarship we wouldn't have given had we signed Butch).  So, all in all, I think we'd probably be net a little worse than we are this year, but maybe would have been a little better the last two years.
Calvin:  I'm a genius.  But I'm a misunderstood genius.
Hobbes:  What's misunderstood about you?
Calvin:  Nobody thinks I'm a genius.

bilsu

Crean is not big on redshirting, so I think we can assume he would have graduated last year if he originally came to MU. So he would not be on this team.

Doctor V

huge help. the way talented bigs get pt around here he would be a full time starter for 2/3 yrs now and help a ton because he would have developed more. lets not lie to ourselves, let TC get a big like him and then we will see.

they say TC is bad for bigs, but will the guys who have gone through wiscy what has bo done?

As bilsu already said, he would have graduated by now.

Rockmic87

Bottomline is that Butch should have went to MU...He would have started right away, and would have been a go to guy down low. Instead he went to a heavy front court UW program and have not lived up to all american mcdonalds expectations!

Harrison

I will say this... if Butch went to MU his physique would be about 10X better.  He may have put on weight but his muscle mass and definition are that of a Fresman in the MU program.
