Isn't this all that matters?

While Wilson has seen a change in his role, he hasn't seen much of a decrease in his playing time. He averaged 29.3 minutes per game as a starter and has played 29.0 minutes per game off the bench. His numbers off the bench would likely be higher except Marquette (6-2) has played its freshmen reserves as well as walk-ons at the end of back-to-back blowout wins.

Or as Brent said about not starting Crowder, it's not who starts that is important, but who is on the court at the end of the game.

On this front Duane was on the court at the end of the game ... LSU and nearly gave all us a heart attack when he missed the three pointer.

tower912

Yup.   He is getting his minutes and he is on the court at crunch time.

And with Haanif proving to be more valuable as an off guard than as a point, Wilson is getting run at the 1 which is important for him at the next level.  Unless something drastic happens I don't think Wilson will start many games the rest of the season.

Duane Wilson isn't playing at the next level, unless you mean in Europe.  He could have a very long career there.

I mean generally a post college playing career, Europe, Asia, NBA, NBDL, whatever....he will be doing that as a point guard if he is doing it at all.

Its a bit early to say that, isn't it?  He's only a sophomore.

Goose

I think Wojo is hoping he learns to play within himself and can be trusted playing PG once the real season begins. His decision making was horrible early on and still believe you will see plenty of PG from him starting on Saturday.

Like when Big East play starts? Doubt it, they're running with Traci for better or for worse.

At 6'2", he either has to be a PG OR have a gifted scoring touch to be in the NBA.  He's not going to be the primary point guard here unless something happens to Traci, and I don't think he is a gifted scorer.

I think he is going to be a very good college player when all is said and done.  And I think he can make a lot of money playing basketball.  I just don't think it will be in the NBA.

GoldenZebra

I dont see why people felt the need to complain about his level of play. Marquette is winning. Thats all that matters now. This team doesnt have the luxury of assuming wins will be there to allow such talk about who should be starting or blah blah blah.

mujivitz06

Seemed like something was off with him in the Maine game. Didn't do much and looked out of sync. I wondered if he was sick or something?

Goose

TC has fared well and hat's off to him thus far. I am a tough judge and do not see him as long term 30 minute solution at PG. For two years I heard how Dawson was the guy and he was completely outmatched. PG is most important position in the college game and for success against better competition Wilson is best option IMO.

I am curious as to why you think he is the best option.  Because I don't really see it.  And I don't see any indication that Wojo does either, otherwise he would be getting more minutes there right now.

Goose

Sultan,

I think that because Wilson is a far superior basketball player than TC. In addition, he is a greater threat to score from outside and can score in transition. These last few games do not even count as a scrimmage IMO and I believe Wojo got TC experience.

It was like the watching the Packer game last Thursday night, I do not believe that Crockett will be playing over Lacy when the games are more important and do not see TC as playing over Wilson when games start to count. IMO Wilson and JJJ will be the starting backcourt, or play the biggest chunk of minutes, beginning on Saturday. They are the best guards on the team and they have experience.

ChitownSpaceForRent

Disagree Goose. From a pure scorers standpoint yes Duane is better. But Traci is so much better at Duane at managing the game and can still hit outside shots. With Henry, Luke, Duane at the 2 and JJJ or Sandy on the floor, you don't need Traci to score.

Also, I believe that Traci should have been a top 100 recruit. But because he did not really play AAU and a knee injury, he didn't get the exposure others did.

Goose

Respect your opinion but do not agree. Biggest thing I believe is Wilson makes the two big's better and vice versa. This team will go as far as the two big guys and PG will take them. If uptempo is what Wojo wants than Wilson is the guy. I look at Wilson as a perfect type guy to play PG at Louisville and that is good enough for me. He is guy that brings more dimensions to the position.

I just don't see how Duane can all of the sudden be getting the most minutes at PG when he hasn't been the primary point guard since he has been on campus.  If that was Wojo's plan, why wasn't he playing him more at point the last few games?  He even started Traci against LSU and ASU.

Goose

Sultan

Maybe he was in the doghouse and learning a lesson while TC got experience. For the record, at 52 years of age I could have played the point the last few games. Not sure what Wilson would have learned on a positive by logging more minutes at PG.

TC has done fine, but his handling of the press and stiffer D by LSU is what stands out to me so far from him. He struggling in those situations and would expect the same to hold true when we play a college basketball time again.

You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Please stop using 'TC'.    Makes me think of Crean.   I was where you are, Goose, a couple of weeks ago after the Iowa game.   But Traci has looked good the last few games.   If he struggles against Bucky, I may go back on the fence.

Do not want to get Crean thoughts into your head. Nothing against Carter here, just do not believe that he is 30 minute PG for NCAA team at this point. We have Henry for one year and need to make something happen.

Goose

CreantoAA

If we go to NCAA with you at the point I will be happy. No worries on losing the bet...want to see us maximize the potential and I do not see Carter as the answer. That said, I am one of few that believe that Tony Miller was the most overrated PG in school history. So, who knows maybe Carter is the next Tony Miller.

The same "stiffer" LSU defense that we saw Traci go for 9 assists to just 3 turnovers against?  The same defense that Duane Wilson had 2 assists and 4 turnovers against?

I don't mean this as a knock on Duane, but he isn't a point guard.  His biggest asset is his ability to score the basketball off of the ball.  If you make him your point guard you are not only making him less effective, you are making the team worse.

Duane just set a career high in assists with 5 last game.  Traci Carter is 8 games into his college basketball career and is averaging more than Duane's single game career high also averaging almost a full turnover per game less than Duane despite being on the ball whenever he is in the game.

One guy is a point.  The other guy is a scorer.

I don't think many thought Jimmy or Wes would be NBA players their sophomore year, let alone NBA stars.

Give Duane time. I still think he's going to be an absolute stud in the college game. I tend to agree that he'll probably never play in the NBA (perhaps a cup of coffee), but he certainly has a chance.
