Philly toughness = Physical D and heady passing

Hank is good.  He got lost at times, but he's young.  It will be hard to say goodbye in april.

If our guards could have played Big East type defense during the game, we would have been better off.  However, I like that our guards can learn defense that appreciates the footwork more than the hands on game.

If we can secure a trip every 4 years...
    -It may entice recruits
    -It helps team chemistry/unity
-We may have a few more fans next time

Posted these in the game thread...added a few more here:

  • Duane was a star today. Hopefully he can put together a season like this, he was a bit mercurial last season. We need him to be consistently good.
  • Henry is a talent. The word for his offense is smooth. Needs to box out better, but he does a good job of controlling rebounds. Uses his arms well to secure the ball high.
  • Traci Carter was very good, the bright spot for me. I liked the nickname the foreign announcer gave him, "The Engine". Feels apropos.
  • Free throws were horrible. But improved as the game went on.
  • The floor was awful. Seriously dangerous out there. Felt the game was slipping away in more ways than one before that late run.
  • Hard to know how significant this is. Haukar looked competitive, but it seems like they're a mid-level Icelandic team. Not exactly a marquee league. Good for the team, but hard to say how good.
  • Second half was much better. Marquette gave up a lot of back door cuts, second chances, and open threes early. Improved quite a bit later. After losing the first two quarters, they tied in the third and really dominated the last 5 minutes of the fourth.
  • Sandy looks improved. Still starts his shot too low, but hit some threes, showed his strength, and was overall fairly effective.
  • Fischer was solid. Yeoman's effort today. Him and Hank will be a load together.
  • Of the bench players, Sacar Anim looks like he'll get early minutes, possibly ahead of JJJ and Wally. Had some freshman mistakes, but plays hard, decent defense, and lots of energy.
  • JJJ was invisible. Wasn't out there much and didn't do much when he was. Seems like he's behind Cohen, Wally, and Anim.
  • Speaking of Wally, he plays hard and his shot looks decent (even if it didn't fall). Seems like he'll be an asset off the bench. Not a great player, but serviceable and able to provide minutes.
  • Wojo is in mid-season sideline form already, but needs to work on preserving that voice for the post-game interview.

Does the archiving of the game on YouTube happen immediately or does anybody have any idea when it may be available to view?

It's available now. Link is on gomarquette.com (go to MBB schedule) or you can just go to YouTube and type in "Marquette Haukar" and it should come up.

Hopefully we will not have to.

I'm sure it was discussed in another thread already, but why didn't Cheatham play?

Henry may go pro after one year.  A 6'10" guy with his athleticism, offensive touch and ability to run the floor is a hot commodity.

Duane Wilson is a small NBA shooting guard.  A dime a dozen.  He needs to play the point to have any chance in the NBA, and he's not even playing it now.

Not cleared by the NCAA yet.

Duane is transferring?

He's certainly not going to the NBA anytime soon. 6'1" SGs aren't exactly a hot commodity.

If he was 6'5" and played the way he does, he'd be a 1st rounder/lottery pick.

Edit: Sorry Sultan - didn't see your post.

Traci & Henry will improve our basketball IQ immensely. And they will both play big minutes.

You're probably correct.  Right now, I suppose I'd be happy with just one National Championship, but as soon as we win it this year, I'm sure I'm going to start pining for back-to-back titles.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

Think it is way too early to predict anyone is leaving in April based on this game against a weak undersized team. Let's see how folks play against good NCAA talent first.

Sounds like the Warriors did pretty well today. Did not see the game. Duane appears to have picked up where he left off last year, and then some. Carter sounds promising. And Henry appears to be the real deal.

What about the other team? What was their ability? D1 or lower?
I thought you were dead. Willie lives rent free in Reekers mind. Rick Pitino: "You can either complain or adapt."

If DJO barely makes the NBA, Jerel and Vander don't get drafted what makes you think Duane would have a chance leaving after this year?

Retire Terry Rand's jersey!

Can we bring Thomas to Milwaukee to call some games next year?  I'll take him over Dickey Simpkins, and everyone on FS1 other than Marshall and Raff.

You don't like Tim Brando, Eric Collins, Dick Stockton, Joe Davis or Justin Kuchter as play by play men?

I see. What is the issue with his eligibility that is under review...?

My guess is that they are sorting out his transcript to see what classes fill the eligibility requirements.  He is by all accounts a good student, so I doubt this is anything but a bump in the road.

This win will surely help with our seeding.
Assume what I say should be in teal if it doesn't pass the smell test for you.

Definitely Division I.  I would say no lower than 200 RPI.  Was a semifinalist in Icelandic league playoffs last year per announcer, and have added a good player from the US in Billy Madison who, disappointingly, looked nothing like Adam Sandler.  Great outside shooting, good offensive movement, but little height.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

Quote from: muguru
No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Benny B

I watched ten minutes of the game before my ears started bleeding from Broeker's commentary; you're supposed to be providing color analysis on the game, Mike, not MU's basketball program.  Sounds like a damn infomercial... I'm expecting Mike to toss out an 800-number for season tickets at just $99 per month on the EZ-Pay plan.

I'd rather listen to the radio broadcasts for UK, KU, NC, and Dayton before I'd listen to Broeker again.  Heck, I'd even listen to their college radio stations' post-game shows before I'd put Broeker on the air - or YouTube - ever again.

I thought they looked like a solid D1 team.  They could shoot the ball.  And they had several guys as big as HE, so I wouldn't necessarily call them "small".

I would take the Rick SLU program right now.
