driving to chattanooga(from waukesha) but want to stop and stay around louisville the first night.  can't leave until 7 pm,  so 400 miles or about 6 hours of drive time should be about right for the first potty stop.  anyone know of a good/safe area to lay er down?  wondering if the area just north of louisville, in indiana, right around ohio river is cool?  otherwise, most blogs say anywhere east and south of louisville is good, but i might find myself stretching it pretty good and 2 am is about as far as i want to go-get 4/5 hours of shut-eye and then hit the road again -thanks

GGGG

The area just off I-65 in Jeffersonville, IN is just fine.  Nothing fancy but a decent places (like a Fairfield Inn) if you are just looking for a place to crash.

I used to go to Louisville a lot when I was with PepsiCo in Japan. There is a Holiday Inn adjacent to KFC HQ where every room is saturated in cigarette smoke. It has to be the worst hotel I ever stayed at.

thanks guys-i might try for just south of indianapolis(4 hrs) instead of 6 hours becoming 7 + after working all day;  then it becomes a marriage tester on day one.  i've got all day friday to finish it off.  moving my son from chattanooga to nashville.   go see the lookouts in chattanooga, then some knee-slappin in nashville-love both cities.  thanks again!

found a nice hotel in jeffersonville on the river, but $300 was a little steep for 4-5 hours of sleep

Nashville is awesome!  I lived several blocks south of the Vanderbilt campus for three years.  Good times.

It fits with his limited time in town. I hear they have some under a minute specials that are knee buckling

You know, Doc, as a fighter pilot I have seen and heard many strange, weird, and f#cked up things but The Pitino Porcini story combines all three in one heady stew of decadence, pathos, and remorse. Truly one for the ages.

nobody suggested The Brown?  Really good (if overrated) restaurant complete with both secret doors where Chicago mobsters could flee their card games and across the street from where The Insider was either filmed or based.

I used to have to go to UPS 2X per month and though it's not my style it was the best recommendation i have in that armpit of a city.

In defense of my "brown" recommendation, i was younger and it was UPS.  I'm more than impressed that JB had that photo so readily available.  Very much a Scoop Savant moment.

This seals it.

I've stayed in three hotels in Louisville over the last 7 years, every single one was disgusting smoke inhabited. Louisville hotels are the worst.

We're in Louisville once a year for a kids' tournament.  We always stay at the Crowne Plaza near the airport and convention center.  It's always been clean and pretty nice.

I'll recommend a little place we stumbled upon:  Momma's.  Quite possibly the best barbecue I've ever had -- KC style.  Just a little converted house with about 8-10 tables upstairs and a pretty good sized basement.  Delicious.
Never wrestle with a pig.  You both get dirty, and the pig likes it.

I'll second the Brown.  About 65 Bourbons in the little bar up the stairs on the landing.  Very cool architecture.  From what I remember
Peace, Love, and Rye Whiskey...May your life and your glass always be full

My favorite SFW business travel story happened at the Brown.  Eight of us were seated in one corner of the restaurant:
Person next to me: What do you keep looking at?
Me: You see the lady with her back to us at the table in the opposite corner?
Her:  You think you know her?
Me:  I think it's my Mom.  But she lives in CT.
Her:  A lady with her back to you across a large and crowded dining room is not your Mom.  You've got issues.
**a couple of those 65 bourbons later**
Me:  It's killing me I'm going
Her (to the rest of the table): You've got to watch this.  We'll be able to tell the "remember when Finigan asked a stranger 'are you my Mommy'" story.

As i approached the table the confused looks i got told me i was making a huge mistake, but it was Ma Finigan.  Almost gave her a heart attack.  At her retirement party 10ish years later i was asked to tell that story about 10 times and got to hear the POV from some sitting at her table - most were nervous that i was about to ruin their evening through some brash interaction.

Eldon

Best place to stay is Indianapolis or Cincy (both about roughly 1.5 hrs away).  To be fair, I was only in Lville one day and one night, but that was about 23 hours too long.  See the 4th street live area (I think that's what it's called), the big baseball bat at the Louisville slugger museum, and then leave.
